I'm kickin around the idea to go try and get some halibut before we are locked in for the winter.
I kinda need to try and get a moose but honestly fishing sounds better.

Too early to commit but I may be entering the elks derby in October but I have an invite from a powerboat for the tourney but that's where I'm headed through October when the weather and life allows!

Uhhhgg. So no one to go hunting with either. If I get one no one is around to help pack.

Looking at the spot forecasts now it looks doable but bordering on iffy by anchor point. A guide told me its a great time of year to fish around there.

It's 11 at night, I'm not prepared to do anything cause I can't decide!

Okay report time. I went moose hunting on Saturday while I waited on marine weather to hopefully clear up.
The only place with halfway decent weather was Whittier so I went there on Sunday.

I fished for about 4 hours mostly right at the end of the bay where the big creek flows in. I had one takedown right off the bat and that was it.

I had some other people commercial ahem I mean recreationally fishing next to me and they were hammering the skates and they even caught one of those wolf eel things. That was all I saw

Lots of belugas spotted along the drive and saw a bore tide

The good thing is I got to test my downrigger setup on the AI. It worked great. It's about as easy to work as one on a boat. And it was fun to troll while kicken back and tending the sail hAhah

I sure hope the weather breaks next weekend. One more halibut trip needs to happen!

Not worthy of a new category but I did try Summit Lake on the Kenai Peninsula for a few hours Sunday.  Nadda.  Saw a few guys catching stocker size trout with bait under a float.  I was trolling big stuff.

Deep sharp angled lakes.  The banks have to be 45 deg sloped or more.  Interesting lake.  Won't be doing that again I don't think.  too many better options though I hear there are trophy trout in the lakes.

Best 'bow out of there for me -- float tubing a couple years back I caught a 24" rainbow on a black nymph, south end. I've liked that lake ever since -- lots of 14"-18" trout with the occasional bruiser. A reliable destination for C&R fun.

I think anything that could present a bait, lure, or fly into the weed pockets on the south end would have success.  Saw quite a  bit of activity.  I also saw a pretty large fish well over 20" jump but it looked almost like a carp.  Golden yellow.  I didn't mean to dish on the lake.  With depth and limited pressure and some shallow areas, this could definitely be a trophy producer.  Next time instead of the downrigger and big plugs, I will also try flyrods in the shallows.

But from here to freezing, I think its Homer or the Kenai River.  Might try Lake Louise before it freezes.

Didn't think you were giving the lake short shrift -- just wanted to confirm that there are some pretty fish in there even if a little finicky.  Whenever Seward doesn't produce for me, I stop there to give my fly rod a little action and restore my faith in my ability to catch fish. Lots of fly-changing to find what provokes the bite, but then... wonderful action there.

Looks like this weekend's weather might be cooperative -- and if family responsibilities permit I think it's time for a Kenai float or some Russian River rainbow fishing.  C_Danger is talking about doing a little bird hunting in the Upper Russian lakes area, and if so I'll borrow a pal's packraft and do some flyfishing in and between the lakes where there are more trophies to be had. That stretch of river between the lakes if full of big bears, which are always fun to watch from the water.  I'm wondering if I can paddle upstream between the lakes to maximize the drifts through there. Must check the regs though, as the mid-lakes river stretch has lots of restrictions.  Anyway, that's what I'm dreaming of for this coming weekend.

As ever, looking forward to reports out of the weekend though.

No plans this weekend. I've been sick all week.  We have the kids so likely one shore excursion.  I really would love a couple more halibut and a few kings!

So the quick report of 9/14. Kenai guy landed 2 halibut, an Irish lord and I think he lost two halibut.

I was using a red salmon head, hoping for a big one. I did have something grab on to it and give it a big yank and that was it. And I had another yank which broke my line. Might have just been a broke knot, which I have experienced with this braid line.

We were 3 miles out fishing in 100 feet of water off anchor point. All action occurred right around peak high tide

I'm seriously considering a homer run. I would fish in front of condos for kings  and if no kings, I'd head to the green buoy to either troll with my downrigger right on the bottom or maybe use my 8lbs downrigger ball to anchor up. Not quite sure how smart that is.

Most of my kings out of homer came in October and I saw a few halibut,  25 pounders, caught during that time out by the green buoy. Never seems hot but I saw fish!!!!
