Sometimes Hobuck is about the place, other times its about the people you go with.  This was the latter.  It was mostly a trip to welcome NWNoob back from a 6 month vacation.  Most folks got out there Thursday or early Friday.  We didn't get there until Friday, and the other guys were still cleaning fish when we pulled up at 8pm.

The south sound crew hit the ocean again, likely the last run this year for most of us.  Marie wasn't feeling it, so I actually got to catch fish instead of just watching her catch fish all day while I got skunked.

Saturday was when all the action happened for me - we started out trying to pick up some bait - Ravdakot managed some bait rather quickly but I couldn't seem to catch a greenling under 15 inches.  I know, big problem right?  After ~2 hours of chasing bait we headed out to bigger water.  I don't usually get broken off at Hobuck.  I tend to run heavy enough leader not to, but this weekend was different.  Lost multiple fish to broken 20 and 30# leaders.  For every fish lost, there were at least 3 caught.  I wasn't the only one getting broken off, but I'll let others tell their tails.  I had it in my head that I wasn't keeping anything under 26" and ended my day with a pair of ~28 and 29 inchers, including this really bright yellow fella:

Apparently I forgot to bring any snacks out there, and before I knew it, it was almost 6pm.  We still had fish to clean and I promised the kids I'd boogie board with them too.  No boogie board pictures, but you can see in this picture that I'm nearly at the exhaustion point:

Cleanup:

After everything was cleaned up, I helped Marie fry up the fish (still wearing my drysuit).  We had no idea Dino was frying fish up too, so later Dino and Marie walked around camp and passed out fish to other campers.  I'm getting ahead of myself...

After the fish was fried up we headed over to the camp and Dino's giant tarp.  Fish Tacos, Oysters, and the best damned salmon poke I've ever had.  That S was good!  Spent a lot of good time around the fire that night.  Ribbing each other, letting my daughter push holes through melting glass bottles with a cooking stick, and eating sooo much good food.

Around 11pm I decided I should pour the frying oil in the fire instead of down the drain or into the dumpster.  You read where we were already melting bottles in this fire right?  I have a good grasp on making REALLY hot fires, and this was no exception, so adding oil was pretty spectacular.  Ravdakot assured me it would just burn like a wick though, and there was nothing to worry about.  HAHAHA!

Yeah, we're turning our faces to the side because it's THAT hot.  It was 1.5 gallons of oil, so it took 6 or 7 dumps with similar results.

Somehow Dino's tarp survived, and nobody had to get stuck in the chest with a needle either.  Very good end to a great weekend!

My brother picked up his first Cabezon...pretty decent at 24"

We also picked up our limit in Lings.

Great trip... hanging with some great friends and family.

Great reports guys.

I love it the safety consciousness involved while cleaning fish on solid ground.

Still got the PFD on.  ;)

Nice report Lee!  That looks like a great time and if Dino's cooking, you know the food's good.

HA!  I was suffering from the deepest throes of AOTY sickness, chasing that few more inches for hours on end with little food or water,  the pfd was the only thing keeping my mental faculties from sinking into a sea of madness! Great weekend tho,  got lots of fish and the coolest part was having a couple grey whales cruise by maybe 20 yards away then a sea lion backstroke between me and the whales.  Also lee likes fire after a few drinks.  And Dino eats everything.  Deepfried lingcod roe tastes like scrambled eggs.  Also fillis and robin is a hilarious reference to the fact that first off I am whipped by my wife and am alergic to most things so she does the yard work and etc. there fore the name "Fillis", the apparent female version of my name, and the fact that Adam12 was the faithful sidekick in both ravdakots chum fishing story and photo that was posted last fall on kayakanglermagazine.com and my recent story and pic on kayakanglermagazine.com.  Sooo go fishing with Adam, he is good luck!

Oh yeah.  Also caught a ling with a huge octopus leg that was hanging out of its mouth. The leg was still moving too so I knew it was fresh. So yeah I cooked it up back at camp and it was delicious.

Cooking up the Ling roe was good but I wish I had some bacon to cook it with. . usually cook shad roe with Bacon.

Haha, Fillis and Robin... Adam will never live it down. This was definetly an amazing weekend of fishing and sharing  camp with good friends! I'm doing a bit of editing, then I'll post the vids of the second fish that broke off 55# braid, and then the 33 incher that has taken temporary residency in my deepfreeze.

Freakin' bastards!  Hey, I'll happily be a sidekick if it means catching fish!

Awesome weekend on and off the water.  I left bright and early on Thursday for a little time on the water that afternoon.  I pedaled around for a few hours and managed a 27" ling and a couple misc rockfish/greenling.  Thursday made me realize how much more fun fishing can be with a few friends out there with you.  Catching fish is great but add in some good natured ribbing and random yelling and it is a damn blast!!  Friday and Saturday were epic compared to Thursday.

I woke up Friday morning to see a new tent set up as Rav and NWNoob had come in late Thursday night.  Once everyone was up, we BSed a little bit and started getting the boats together.  By 10 we were on the water and I'm pretty sure everyone got their limits.  My first complete limit out at Hobuck and personal bests for each species.  Right about now I wish I had taken more pictures.  I ended up filleting right at the beach and have no full stringer hero shots to speak of... damn!!

Saturday, we decided to skip all the damn structure stops and make it to Strawberry Rock.  Well. . we mostly did that but still HAD to stop a few times.  I must have lost 6 setups including two Wilson Darts, a live bait setup and many jig heads. . brutal!  Payback for Friday's bounty I guess...  We made it out to Strawberry and had a really nice tupperware armada of boats all over. . great to see!  I caught a smallish greenling and was going to pass it off to Rav (since I lost my setup) and he gave me the idea of just using a 6oz jighead w/greenling as bait.  Why the hell not?  I set up, dropped it to the bottom, reeled up a few times and fished the little guy.  Now things get interesting...

Around 20 min later after numerous greenling shakes and me expecting the big take down it finally happened.  Luckily, the others on the trip explained how this live bait thing goes down and I was ready.  I felt the strike and let the fish take line/chew on my bait for a bit.  My first pull and the ole tiger stick acted like it was pulling up a VW.  I got a few cranks on the reel and then line just screamed off.  Holy hell I have a big one!!  I fought for a few minutes through NWNoobs (Nate) "Hell yeahs" and then the damn fish took it all back and screamed back to the bottom.  This time, I felt like I was snagged as I couldn't move the line.  SHIT!  Pedaled forward around 20 kicks and out it came from the rock.  Haha. . F'er!!!  I started reeling like hell and could tell the fish was watered (instead of winded?  I dunno).  I'm getting closer to the top and with shoulders screaming anxiously waiting to see my damn swivel.  About this time Nate makes it over to me and offers up his big net.  I only had a small one as my big one is a freaking knot/snag disaster.  Sure I'll take it!!  He tries to hand me the net and all I can think about is how I lost a couple kings this year after long fights and how much I wanted this sucker.  I asked him to net it and he instantly said "I don't want to jack up your points!".  My response, "I'm not doing AOTY, net the damn thing!"  Hahaha.  About this time, the fish is on the surface and it is a beast... head like a damn basketball.  I get it around between us and it spits the bait and hook.  The fish is just floating, stunned, before waking up and disappearing into the depths.  Nate sees the bait and hook away and dip nets the fish just before it swims off!!! Holy SHIT!  Amazing assist and what a freaking fun battle.

Great damn weekend and I'm ready to go back already!  Thanks to everyone for a memorable trip; I learn something new every time I fish with you folks.  One of these days. . .  no more sidekick!!  Here are the results of my epic battle:

Lingcod grilled with butter, dill, garlic; toast with Italian seasoning; Roma tomatoes from my deck with salt, pepper, and aged balsamic white vinegar.  The small bit at the top is ling cheek.
