I hear the Homer Elks King Derby is Oct 5 & 6.  I hear the fish are farther out than normal.  But this is the time year they should be available by the condos or by the bluffs.

I got recruited to run a powerboat team so I won't be fishing it from a kayak.  Small halibut should still be available as well in the area.

A video from last year's tournament.  If the weather cooperates, it's typically a lot more action than the March derby.

They are still too far out for Kayak range but that can change in a hurry.  We flailed and failed Sat urday and Sunday due to BIG waves.  We stayed close by the Islands and towards Haliibut Cove.  Caught at LEAST 50 pollock and one 6 inch salmon.

Not sure what we are going to do.  Watch the reports and weather. I saw a nice limit taken by charters on Saturday but they had to run out to Flat Island to get them which is around the corner from Pt Pogi and Seldovia.

Only thing we caught other than the pollock was a buzz from some good whiskey and a sunset....

Beautiful sunset ...

Definitely can't make the October derby, though I'm seriously jonesing for some time on the water. My mother has been referred to hospice, and I'm sticking pretty close to her side these days. I think she's going to rally, but only time will tell. Only when she's comfortably sleeping do I scan the NWKA site and watch kayak fishing videos, taking my fun vicariously. A measure of my concern is that I have already skipped a weekend in the Swanson area lakes and a Gulkana float -- two September favorites.

Good luck with in the derby Rudy. What have you got to lose, Andy?

Hunting time and entry fee is all I'd lose.

Haven't decided what to do yet.  The bears are pretty active right now and I already have a freezer full of fish.  Might try and go chase another blackie down.

Dunno yet.

Day one results...7 kings on 4 rods. So pretty slow.  BUT we did go three for five right next to the green can so they are moving in kayak range!!!!

Day two was BRUTAL.  Not because we didn't catch anything, other boats HAMMERED them.  It's a big ocean and we just weren't in the right spot.

But at any rate, it was a good weekend.  Got to hit it with the Kayak before it gets too ugly.  Hit some fish right by the green can.

Friday we shot a couple of grouse with the kids.  Could have had more but it's their first shot at a live target and we were using high powered airguns

A very rough cut of this weekend's fishing...not from a kayak. A few kings, a big black rockfish, and a tiny halbut on tape.   I was trying to see how a "gopro on a stick" would work.  Definitely need to work out the angles and such but I was impressed how well the image was stabilized just holding it.  Definitely a work in progress.
