Now I know this may be a trivial thing to talk about but have any of you fellow bug wavers ever used braided line (spectra not Dacron) for backing?  Because I had this weird idea to use power pro depth hunter line as backing... thinking of using this on my small spey rod I have but just looking for input on the subject...

Had toyed with that idea using it for lings on the fly. Never made it that far.

Try gel spun instead of dacron. Thinner diameter and tougher than braid.

Watch for pm too..have a great resource for you.

Oh, and hey, Spey from a yak?? ummmm might wannna rethink that. .... >:D

I have used Dacron in place of backing, especially on my 8 weights and larger. I experimented with newer braided lines but I personally don't like the feel and not sure that thin line is good for my fly rod guides. I have not tried gel spun but I understand tying knots with it is rather challenging. Regarding rods, I built two 11 foot five weight switch rods and tried skagit heads and heavy tips. It was a fun experiment but casting the skagit head was cumbersome on the kayak. Now when I use the rods on the kayak I use 30 or 50 pound Amnesia or SlickShooter and sinking tips. It gives me a lot of variety and can get the flies deep.
