As some of you know a major goal of my upcoming big fishing year is to connect with a halibut from kayak this year. I've never caught a halibut and one of my biggest concerns was finding fishing locales within pedaling/paddling distance. Using the IPHC 2013 data I did a little spatial and statistical exercise to help me identify locations and also just for the fun of it. Much of the analyses was completed with kayak fishing in mind but it should be helpful for any new halibut fisherman. I've posted the results on my blog.

If you can I would also look into Humboldt County CA. I know and have seen Pacific Halibut pulled in of kayaks there. A great time to go is the Gime shelter tournament in May. There are no seasons for the fish so it opens up the door for flexibility unlike the OR coast IMO. Though the olympic peninsula will be fantastic as well.

The real problem is what will the weather be doing during those precious few days the WA halibut season is open. That's what will determine where you can get out, and if you can get out at all.

The thought keeps me up at night. I suppose I can always fall back to near shore Oregon as the seasons tend to be longer but I know the big buts are up north.

Just keep after it ... Halibut out side of AK are tough to come by. I only know one guy who has caught more than one in Washington or Oregon.
Good luck.

Just come up to AK for a few days.  Plenty of big and small buts to catch in yakable waters.

I'm not sure what you consider big, but there are many locations to successfully chase halibut in a kayak up here.
No matter how many times the PB's tell me I'm nuts....I still smile every time I out fish them

Good info. I fish out of Crescent City. I gave the halibut (California Halibut) a lot of chances last summer all to no avail. I caught 3 sharks all around 48" but no halibut this year. I boated 3 halibut the summer before but none this year.
Get it dialed in and spread the magic potion. Thanks for the graphics.

Wow that is a seriously great analysis and write-up! I love data analysis and visualization, and I know it takes work to produce this type of output. Nice stuff! I really appreciate you sharing it with the community. The thought of targeting halibut has come to my mind as well. This might just push me over the edge into trying it a few times.

I'd really like to get out at least once next year for Halibut.
