I am thinking of putting a motor on my hobie revo 11. I am going back and forth inbetween gas or electric.  Pro for gas is its cheap and lighter,  but I do t know if a 2 hp motor is too much for kayak with the side kick for stability.  But if I get a electric it is very heavy to get the power you need for a all day troll.  Or gets very expensive if you switch to a lithium battey.

Any idea or comment would be awesome

I would opt to not put a motor on it. That kind of defeats the purpose for me.

Battery motors are more expensive initially, but I think over the long run they are actually cheaper and have less maintenance.

We're not hating on you 8) If you are serious....maybe send browneyesvictim a message. He has very impressive electric system setup on his Commander, he can troll all day with it..........unless something goes awray and you forget your paddle a the dock ;D

Undoubtably it could be done either way, however I think the scales would tip in favor of electric over gas given all the other logistics involved. A few of the major ones:

1. I'd bet even if you use a full size blue top AGM battery I think your total weight would be less than a gas motor and gas can.

2. Depending on how or where you mount it, I would also question how you plan to reach the gas motor to start it, switch fwd/rev, steer, etc.

3. There is about 100ft lbs of thrust per hp. Although you would mostly be idling, 2hp  would be overkill. All boats have a manufacturer maximum thrust rating. Im not sure what the Revo 11 is, but I can't immagine its much over 40 or 50 ftlbs.

I've been considering hooking my two outbacks together and attaching a motor. Make the 5 to 10 mile run. Drop the stuff off at shore, do your thing, reattach, then motor back.

Seems like a lot of effort as long as I can catch fish without it. But it's intriguing.

Thanks for the input!!! I've been looking into 2 hp 4 stroke honda and it wieghs 27 lbs. most AGM I've seen are about 50+ lbs.  I've seen some people onling taking a milk crate and useing PVC to secure it in the rod holders and the wheel trolling holes. Then they reenforcedthe back with pressure treated wood as well as the motor mount attached to it all. So it's all within arms reach.  Dose anyone think that could work?????

If I were doing what you are asking for I would probably just drop in an eVolve in the Mirage drive hole or perhaps a custom MinnKota version of one such as this one on Ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hobie-Mirage-Drive-Custom-Minn-Kota-40lbs-Thrust-Trolling-Motor-/271347292199?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f2d8f1827#ht_720wt_1133

Thats cheaper than you can design and build anything else!

Evolve would be the best! Light and powerful I am seriously thinking of it, to put on the rudder so I could do both. The only problem is it over $2000 in Canada. It's hard spending that much $$ it would cost more than my revo.

Thanks for the input!!!

I just reread my original post. I didn't mean to sound like a complete doucher...just a little bit though. I feel like upgrading to a Revo13 might be a better choice than a motor. My Revo13 handles swift current a lot better than my Outback. Im not sure how the Revo11 compares to the outback but i feel it could be similar to pedal against the currebt. The cost of a motor and install seems like more of a pain in the ass than a boat upgrade. That's just my two cents and I'm sure you have your reasons!

Also...those PA's are ridiculous!  That's the ultimate fat man boat.
