Does anyone wax the bottom of their kayak?  Am relatively new to this scene so not sure what all the common practices are.  I used to wax my fibreglass canoe and it made a big difference in how it rode through the water.   Do I wax my yak too?

I've never heard of anybody waxing their kayak.  You could contact Erick Jackson at Jackson Kayaks and ask him whether it helps to wax the bottom of a kayak.  In addition to manufacturing fishing kayaks, the Jacksons manufacture whitewater kayaks, and Eric and his kids are world-class freestyle kayak competitors.  If anybody would know whether waxing a kayak provides any advantages, they would.  Let us know what you find out.  I'm always eager to learn a new trick.

Assuming your talking about fiberglass. Once most the gel coat was gone from dragging it over beaches and rocks, I ground it back and layered on more cloth to keep mine from leaking and so I can drag it around some more.

Wax it if you want it to look pretty when it's hanging on the wall, but that's not what boats are for.

Haha!  Waxing the yak?  Sounds like a euphemism for something dirty.
I would much rather be up a creek without a paddle than down one.

I have thought about doing a little sanding to smooth out the rough spots followed up with some wax.  I always wax my waterskies, kneeboard, and wakeboard.  You can feel the difference.  I am sure some will tell you that the wax will repel fish.  These are the same guys that only wash their yak with lemon Joy.

Asked the same question years back. Rotomolded yak? Maybe a nice thing once a year but not really needed. Fibreglass and other high strength layups? Yeh probably does help.
Also asked about shaving or filling the scratches on the bottom. again up to you but probably not needed either.

Half of you - Thanks for the good opinions.  I'm likely going to try it (it seems to make some kind of good sense to me) and I'll let you know how it seems.

The other half of you -  lol.. Jeezes..

I don't wax my Yak but have used Mothers UV/Protectant on the hatches to keep them nice and shiny black.
