I spent my High School and College years in Depoe Bay and Siletz Keys and then taught in Boardman on the Columbia for 11 years. I am contemplating a return home after 10 years in Guatemala and 5 on the Chesapeake. While in Maryland I got into kayak fishing and would hope to continue doing this if i come back to the PNW.
I am in a secondhand kayak (a Malibu2 rigged single), but catch plenty of Stripers, Speckled Trout, Croakers and Blue Catfish even though it is slow and unattractive (it is amazingly stable).
It has been fun to see my old home (Depoe Bay) become such a Mecca for kayak anglers. I used to work in a marine supply there and on several charters, even a troller for a summer. One year I caught a 17lb chinook off the concrete breakwater near the entrance. Some fun.
I was wondering, are any guys on the forum fishing old OK Drifters or the re-make Old Town Striper? If so how are they working in those waters?
I am also interested in info from anyone who has launched from Salmon River (by Cascade Head) out to the Ocean, Alder lake in WA, or worked the Yaquina Bay Jetty for rockfish/chinook.
I'll keep watching as we see what happens with job/location change.
  Good to meet you all.

Welcome!  Hope you make it back out this way.

Don't know about Drifters and Stripers but I paddle an OK Prowler 13, and have fished out of Depoe during our annual tournament there a couple times.  It handled the conditions very well.

I think some guys here launched from the beach at Cascade head but I couldn't find the thread now. Was that maybe Nate and Craig?? There has recently been a marine reserve established there and I am not sure where the boundaries are but you can look that up online. Welcome back. Salmon River itself is a nice paddle for trout and salmon in season.

Yup that was us, Lingbanger, Langcod, and a guy that used to kayak fish by the name of Noah (sorry Noah). ;).  It was a long way to paddle for the rockfish, but word on the street is we went 180 degrees the wrong way.  It was fun, though.  Three or four of us liked the water there so much we went swimming in it. Here is a link to the report. http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=10554.0  There is a video on the second page of the thread.  Hope to see you around.

We also found out afterwards that it is a popular area for kayak surfing.  I can't imagine why. ::)

Kevinfry, I have the OK Malibu 2 as well and take it everywhere.  It's a total barge, but I can fit both of my kids in it with me.  I only go solo on big water though.  I may upgrade to a Hobie one day...  Come on back to Oregon!  :)
