I need some advice. I am looking at a used Adventure Island and wonder if it's worth spending a few dollars more on a true fishing/sailing yak vs buying a sail for my Revo 13. I have sidekicks for the Revo. My goal is to have more fun on the water, explore new water as well as fish. I am continuing my exploration of fly fishing from kayaks and figure the extra dollars are well spent if I can develop a platform to stand on the AI. I have sailed an AI but have never sailed a Revo.

What water do you want to use it on? The sailing thing seems fun but its also more set up time and hassle each time you hit the water. I personally like more of a keep it simple approach, seems like you spend more time fishing, but maybe an AI would give you more range?

I've never sailed my revo but my assumption would be the AI is a far better option if you really do want to do some sailing.

I have both a  revo with a sail/sidekicks and an AI (see my avatar). The revo will do 3 or 4 knots under sail with the right wind and the AI will do up to 10 (I've never got mine up that fast). Since gettng the AI I only use the revo for rivers or my neighborhood put in spot (the trail is a bit rough and I cannot get my AI down there). For the waters I fish (JDF Strait) i much prefer the AI as it has greater range and the larger sail makes it easier to troll, which is how I fish most of the time. For ease of put in, the revo wins. I guess it all depends on what kind of fishing you do the most.

Thanks for the responses. I fish all types of water from ponds to bays and recently I went down the Clack. This year I want to fish the ocean. I used my Revo all the time until I picked up a used PA 14 which allows me to stand up.

I am looking to travel longer distances on big water like the Columbia, Willamette and larger lakes. I also want a fun sailing boat when fishing is poor. The Adventure's stability, without the sailing options, compared to the Revo, seems to be a minor issue when I need another kayak for friends and family.

I would probably use the Adventure, with or without the sailing options, on the ocean. I have a trailer to transport my Revo and PA so I would put the AI on the trailer and sell the Revo.

Thanks.

Three words: Hal I But.  More time fishing less time struggling against that pesky current.

You have a point.

If you can swing it, I recommend the AI.  If you keep it set up on a trailer, its pretty quick to launch and load.

The AI is a lot of fun to sail.  So much fun that I find myself wanting to sail too fast for fishing a lot of the time.
I havent used my poor little revo for several months...

AI all the way.  Faster, longer range, and it's convertible.

The only bad thing I see with my AI is launching and landing in the surf
No matter how many times the PB's tell me I'm nuts....I still smile every time I out fish them

I'm really really really hoping that an outback with amas and sail kit will do at leeast 50% of what an AI can do...cuz that's what I have!  Have not tried the sail kit and probably won't until summer.  I see huge issues though fishing around the amas and such.  But I will figure that out.  Otherwise I think I will be stepping up to a Tandem Island in the near future due to family size and if I am already loading onto a trailer, then I might as well go big!  haha.  ARGHH...  confused....

I have the amas and fishing around them hasn't been an issue at all. The problem I have had is fishing around the sail. I suggest getting the new furl hardware for the mast, when you hook into a fish you can theoretically furl in the sail to keep it from flapping in your face.  I have used the TI a lot and I will say its a lot of work! And limiting as to where you will be fishing. That being said once you are in the water she's a dream.

I agree with Sturgeon Rod about the furl kit for your Adventure, Kardinal. I made a home made furling kit a few years ago for the sail on my Revo with pvc but the new Hobie one looks pretty slick. The one thing I didn't mention in  my previous post on this thread is the pure fun of sailing on the AI. I have been a power boater most of my life--not much sail experience but I have really enjoyed learning how to sail the AI--it's a blast.

Cool cool!!! I will definitely give it a try in a little more friendly conditions than Alaskan winters!  I can't wait!!! I have an outback so hopefully it's similar. I'll pick up the furl kit for sure! Hoping the turbo fins will be enuf of a daggerboard to get me partially upwind. Thx!
