I'm going to the Kona and Hilo areas on the Big Island of Hawai'i about a month and wonder if anyone has any experience with kayak fishing rentals in either areas as well as any other useful fishing related info?

Looks like Kona Boys and Lucky Gecko rent in the Kona area.  Anyone fish with either of them?  I am not planning on  bringing any fishing or kayak stuff with me so I am pretty much at the mercy of the renter...

Not sure if kayaking is even a reasonable option in Hilo in the winter.

Any suggestions for other charter boat fishing options?  Looks like there could be deep sea fishing in the Kona area.

Haven't been on the Big Island before, so any advice would be welcome.

Thanks!

I've rented from http://www.plentypupule.com/ before.  They should be able to give you some pointers w.r.t. fishing the area as well.

Thanks!

Looks like I could even rent a Hobie Rev 13 which is on my list of boats I'd like to check out on the water.

Give Lucky Gecko a call. When I was in Kona last year Captain chuck was out of town but I talked with him a good bit on the phone. He said he wasn't really doing the guided kayak tour deal any more but would rent you a boat and gear for a day and point you in the right direction. I thought that sounded way better anyway, seemed like a really good guy. It was also pretty cheap too, I think it was only like 60-80 bucks for a day fully outfitted.

Once we went in our friend's small aluminum boat near the airport at Kona. Lots of lava and blue water and it was very placid waters that day. I'd think that area is pretty safe and fishy. The locals fish for ulua off the rocks right there. That's about all I know.

Call Kelly at P & P Kayaks 808-880-1400. They have both Hobie and OK that you can rent
for fishing. Make sure you book in advance, most of the rentals are at kelly's warehouse not
the shop so the need to bring it over. To get a better overview of the fishery here look at the
Aquahunters site.

Like voodoo said, P&P should be able to get you hooked up for the Kona side. Over here in Hilo, don't think there is anybody the rents kayak set up for fishing, I have a Trident 13 & gear that you'd be welcome to take out for a day or two if you'd like though. The weather this time of year is really hit or miss, can be like a lake if there is a NW swell and kona winds, or nasty and blown out if the trades are up. Even if it's rough on the outside, trolling around inside Hilo bay is almost always doable. Dragging a crystal minnow or other swimming plug along the break wall can catch some nice omilu and papio. Shoot me a pm if you're interested, always down to help out a fellow NWKA'er.

Thanks for all the advice!

Sounds like P&P with a reservation is the way to go in Kona.

Jonah - thanks for the offer - I'll PM you when our plans firm up and I know dates of where I'll be when.

Even if we don't get out on the water maybe I can buy you the beverage of your choice and pick your brains about what tackle to use and where to fish.
