me and my friend went fishing today at Polnell point.  Water was flat calm, what some pretty good fast current. I was fishing on the east side of the point the water is fairly deep right off the edge and there is rock bottom structure. I sent down a herring artificial on a 2 ounce jig head. so I was just mooching it very slowly letting it bounce around, and all of a sudden I felt a very strong pull. so I reeled back set the hook and all of a sudden my kayak took off towards the shore I was moving at 5.8 miles per hour and then it stopped. So at this point I am so excited I don't know what is going on I really down start catching up to the fish or whatever it was. And just when I thought I was getting close he heads out towards the middle pulling me almost to the point where I could not control my kayak. And then it was pumping pumping pumping I could not gain anything my drag was all the way up and I was gaining no line it was just clicking. So I started to bill dance the fish up.I was lifting and reeling lifting and reeling I got over top of the whatever it was and then one more run. This went on for about 10 maybe 13 minutes. he took about 200 yards of line and I just decided to break off . I literally had to tie the line to the cleat on the back of my boat and paddle backwards as it was peeling line snapped my 30 pound braid. What a day,

Right on!  Close encounters with the beasts of the depths!   :headbang:  Best part of a story like that is that the thing could have been whatever you wanted it to be and however big too!   ;D

That is insane! I really wish you would have captured a glimpse of the beast. I can't quite comprehend the size of something that could pull a man and kayak that fast.

Skates don't shake their heads, just a steady pull.  They are crazy strong.  If the beast on the hook was doing anything that made the rod shake it was either a halibut or something else without "wings".

I was in skagit bay, not sure if sturgeon hang in there, i dont see why not, its a big system, if they hang infront of Snohomish. And stilly, then they should be there. I didnt think of that, . Who knows, only the jighead does

Absolutely they hang in there.  And your description of the fight, course changing, pumping, and long runs, fits with sturgeon.
