Closer reading--you are right Rudy. I was skimming the rules while at work today--missed or ignored the 'or cellphone'....so ...okay. Eventually I'm going to contribute something worthwhile here. Just not today. :-)

Hey, the only dumb question is one you ask on the water after paying 200 bucks or more for the tournament and then say "Awww...dangnummit!!!!!"  Ask away. I benefitted by trying to find my VHF...which I have yet to find!!! Lol.

Generous response, Rudy! It also prompted a household discussion that will have us buying one--or two portable VHFs so we can communicate with one another if we are separated by too much for normal shouting. Sarah says I tend to leave her "behind"....I like to think of it as I run some basic "recon" missions.  Meh....semantics, I guess.

We have a friend living in Homer--trying to get some intel from him, but I'm not sure he fishes this early. If I learn anything from him, I will share it. Most of the winter king fishers we know are out of Kodiak or Port Lions (on Kodiak Island).

Latest PM from the tournament organizer...

Rudy,
Sorry it's taken me a bit to get back to you. Can you say "one-legged man at an ass-kicking contest"? I checked with our committee and there's no problem being water taxied in and out. Because each kayak is an individual entry, you'll all need to call into by cellphone, give the names of your posse and get your numbers at one time. On the way back in, call HQ on your cellphone and check in each kayak entry. The number at Coal Point HQ is (907-235-3877) and it opens at 7am.

I don't see any problem with using sails.

FYI, the Kayak category prize is a PFD from Sportsman's Warehouse....jim

There will be a sailor among us? Is that with the hobie? I've been eying those since about first moment I got my Outback. I don't understand sails b/c I figure with my luck (or lack of knowledge), they'd just wind up pushing me, literally, anyway the wind blows. However, it'll be cool to see one in action.

I was just asking about the sail cause both kenaiguy and rimfirematt own adventure islands. Would be tight fit on the water taxi but with the right conditions they could just sail to the islands.

The hot location right now are the bluffs.  I guess if the water is perfectly flat it'd be worth a ride up.  We will keep an eye out for the weather and new reports.  Hoping to get back in time to prefish the islands with a veteran to see how it looks.

Kenai guy is a scratch so right now I have michilutiiq, uuqutiq, Rimfire Matt, Akfishergal, and me.  Room for one more. Whose game?  How about your buddy Matt?

Ok the latest set of intel...

We will almost certainly be fishing the Islands.  Fish have been deeper though this sunny weather has brought up water temperature some what.  Bait is preferred, and I would use green label herring or smaller.

The depths have been below 55 ft though this warmer water temperature may bring the fish up into the water column.  I've been told 55 to 80 ft down with total water depth of 60 to 100 feet.  So it sounds like you can use a planer but I would use braid and fish as deep as you can.  If I didn't have a down rigger, I'd consider watching the boats and if someone hooks up, almost power mooch right on the bottom.

I think we will be landing at Quarry beach or Kayak Beach at the south tip of Sadie Cove area.  Look at the map below if you want to familiarize yourself with the trolling area.  Weather looks good, and hopefully I will get one more data set of intel before we head out.  This current data comes courtesy of Jim Lavrakas the Homer Chamber Directory who up until recently ran a charter and also has a cabin in Little Tutka Bay close by so he fishes this area fairly hard.

Map of the area with the dark blue lines the most probable troll paths. To give you an idea.  The map is marked in Fathoms so we will be targeting areas between 10 and 20 fathoms. It is about 0.8 miles from Kayak beach to Grass Island.  It's about 0.5 miles from Grass Island to the closest point on Hesketh Island.  The gap between Hesketh and Yukon Island is about 0.5 miles.  My personal plan is that until I see evidence of better action elsewhere, I am going to concentrate around Grass Island.  When the tide is flooding in, I may try the gap between Hesketh and Yukon Island.  Low tide is at 1pm.

Because there are so many boats you might not need a depth finder, but given the very sharp contours in the area, I would say you are seriously risking losing gear if you don't have one.  My plan is to start with about a 10 to 15ft cushion from the bottom and trying to get closer to the bottom by moving the kayak instead of changing ball depths.  With the blowback if its 80ft deep, I think I will let out 80ft of line in 100 ft of water.  I will likely try and pick up and extra down rigger weight.  I can easily see losing one here.  REMEMBER if you have a clutch on your down rigger, USE IT!!  You want line to pay out if you snag the bottom.  Otherwise very bad things can happen if you are trolling at anywhere near the right speed in a hurry!!!

Hopefully more intel coming!!!!!

 Looks like a great plan.
I've fished a lot in Eldred Passage in my PB. Caught quite a few salmon off the SE point of Yukon Island.
A sonar unit is a very good idea--the contour changes quickly if you are fishing the edges.
You guys should be protected from wind pretty well in that area for most of the day. And it's only about a half hour run back to Homer.
With a 18 foot tide change I'd suggest using 8 to 12 oz. of lead trolling herring if you are not using a downrigger. But I always like to keep it simple.

Good luck to all of you...show the pb'ers how it's done.
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent
