I ran into a huge school of mackerel around Cape Alva last July.

I'll be keeping all the mackeral I pick up while salmon fishing this year!  Turns out they're YUMMY!

Fairly new to the PNW so I'm not sure if this is good or bad...obviously the Tuna part sounds awesome, but how did the last El Nino period affect the PNW weather?

IIRC it generally makes winters warmer and drier.  Can't recall the usual effect on summer weather.

You can find them in bait balls along the coast using your sonar.  They like sabiki rigs or pretty much any small piece of bait on a small hook.  They'll even attack a decent sized spoon on a fast troll.

I hear up in BC a lot guys like to pitch spinners at them on light tackle or if there are surface feeding to catch them on 4 or 5 weight flyrod. Sounds like fun to me and mackeral is one of my all time favorite sushi fish. Maybe we should plan a mackeral/salmon trip. I'd love to do Coho out of Neah Bay this year sounds like a hoot!
