Dear NWKA folks...

My name is Aaron, I was directed towards you fine yak-anglers via my NCKA brothers... thank you for letting me register & be a part of another fine Kayak Association...

I live in the Bay Area CA, and am planning a trip up hwy 101 this summer to visit my mother in Olympia WA. I've always flown, but am dying to make the drive and bring the kayak/camping gear. I've looked into Oregon fishing reg's... I'm sure I'll have more questions about them.

Was wondering if anyone had some great spots along hwy 101 that they like to launch and camp... I'm not a rookie, but prefer to NOT surf launch in unfamiliar areas. Looking at heading through for a week or more in early August, hoping the weather agrees. So how about it... opinions welcome!!

And of course, it would be great to meet/hook up with some of Oregon's finest Yak Anglers along the trip!!

Thanks, Aroneus

Welcome. Sunset Bay is going be a great stop for you. Lots of NWKA folks in the area that you can meet up with. Then there is Depoe Bay as well. Both are protected launches. Pacific City is a surf launch which can be pretty easy depending on the swell size and direction. When are you going to be making the trip?

Welcome and +1 on Sunset Bay. Send me a message if you think you're going to stop here to fish. I'd be more than happy to show you our local fishing grounds and I'm sure the others wouldn't mind tagging along too.
Are you going to be at GS8?

+1 on Sunset bay! Message me too as well! Sunset is ankle slapping launch, beautiful area and pretty much guaranteed fish! Plus it gives me an excuse to "have" to go fishing :banjo:

Port Orford dock beach unless it's windy. Two state parks within ten miles. Oh, did you hear about Sunset Bay?

Thanks folks... most helpful...

As for WHEN I'll be in the area, TBA - shooting for the first and second weeks of August to make it up (as long as it takes)... if I can milk a few more days out of the trip up, I'll spend more time in the area - plus we've got the trip BACK to CA for more fishing & hookups! I'll keep you all posted in real time when we get up there... will be bringing crab pots, poles, etc. So looking forward to it!!! Will have to GoPro the experience for my NCKA brothers here in CA to show them how it's done in Oregon :)

Thanks so much for the locations - KEEP THEM COMING - if I have to spend a week in Oregon inching my way up the coast to hit some great spots, then SO BE IT :)

Hope you do stop in and fish with us here at Sunset. You're gonna love the launch and the fishing grounds are very close to the launch. Let us know when you nail down a time.

Hey Aaron, +1 on all everyone else said. Just want to mention The "Sunset Bay Angler Of The Day Kayak Fishing Challenge" is going to be held August 23rd here in Coos Bay at Sunset Bay State Park.  Hopefully you will be here either on the way up or down at that time and can join in on the fun!

Anyways, whatever time your here there is a great crew of guys that will be glad to show you some of the sites..

Port Orford to the south is nice too, like C_Run said, if the wind  and swell is light and/or coming from the north. It is a surf launch but shin slappers in the right conditions and some great fishing grounds.

Of course to the north is Depoe Bay which is a must do if your tripping along the coast and i'm sure you will be able to talk some folks in going out there when you are in that area.

Keep us posted when the time gets near and hope you have a great road trip!

See ya on the water..
Roy
