I am.  Just wondering what others are using in it's place.

I find it awkward.  Gotta turn around and grope for suntan lotion and tackle box.  Tackle box always hard to get back in the crate because other stuff falls in its place.

I have a Hobie Revo.  Nice big well back there.  I'm thinking, just put the stuff in the well/depression.  I'd carry a  net bag to put the tackle box and valuables in it, if it gets stormy.  I'd secure the bag just in case I capsize.

  Am I being petty?

There are alternatives, cut the front side of the crate down a few inches to facilitate easier access, place a shallow crate atop the lower deeper one and place items most often used in it, go to a soft case, etc. etc.  Use your imagination and creativity to design something that overcomes the "flaws" in a crate and maybe you'll start a new trend.

Here is an idea for organizing all those small items such as bug repellent, yada, yada, yada.  Go to a garden supply and get a garden tool organizer that straps onto a 5gal. bucket.  They have lots of pockets and the strap fits around the top of a standard crate.  That would make getting your tackle box in and out much easier and free up space for more items to get in the way.  Good luck.

One thing I had to do right after my first outing was re-evaluate my tackle and gear...something we've all had to do at some point.
I went from carrying everything in the back of my truck, to trying to carry everything in a sit-in kayak...uh, nope!
I quickly had to figure out what was absolutely necessary and what was just fluff...
I used what I had at the time...a couple small Plano boxes and a couple zip-lock bags...   ...still am   :banjo:

While I agree that the milkcrate might be a little tacky to some...it is highly functional.
It holds all your gear, while not holding water (which is kinda handy).
It is also very easy to modify to suit your needs...as all the videos on YouTube show...

The MilkCrate is just a vessel in need of filling.
Take a look at your tackle and fishing "needs", maybe look at how you're currently packing your stuff...
If you've got the gear dialed in, maybe it's just the organization of it that needs a little kick...
Muliti-tiered...segmented...chopped sides...Plano boxes...   ...check YouTube...
Some of those videos are solid ideas that just need a little tweaking...
Some are just nuts...but they are from down south... ;)

I second what FireFly was saying, go the the 'ol drawing board and make a new wheel...or one that works better for you...just post pics!

never put a milk crate in my yak....just the simple orange plano box is all I need for "dry storage", small first aid kit, dobbin' stock, air horn, yak repair kit etc..
I use some of the small cheap soft sided coolers for various things, food, tackle, extra clothing etc.
I just make sure each has a line attached to the yak, I can quickly, easily and safely reach back and grab a bag that contains what I need at the time.
I do own milk crates to pack gear in, they just stay in the truck after loading the yak.

I don't use a milk crate anymore. I used one with the Outback but I find it to be too bulky. I don't take as much gear with me anymore. I use the Revo now and have even less room. I have one or two Plano boxes and a small dry box for extra GoPro batteries and other things that need to stay dry. I like to keep the tank well free so I have room for all my fish  ;D

Boxofrain, that's what I'm thinking about: small, soft cooler bags, for smallish lure boxes. Seems to me they would be easy to snatch out of the well without turning sideways and to further have to feel around in a milk crate for suntan lotion, sheath knife, etc.

I have a flat, 2-sided Plano tackle box. Actually, becoming disenchanted with this tackle box.  Seems cumbersome for kayak use.  Fills the width of the milk crate exactly when standing on end, however. [I just have it standing outside the crate to show it to you.]

Thanks for the help.  I'll get it worked out.

Sounds like a must-have.  Must be able to find an application. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41mlM28f9KL.jpg  Don't like the pink trim, however.

I love my milkcrate!!!  :love7:
I also love my old faithful Northface butt bag, foam pipe insullation (for wrapping pre-tied leaders) and Plano trays.

:) I just wrote a nice post about the advantages of a milk crate and then accidentally navigated away without posting.

The YakAttack BlackPack is a nicer-looking alternative, but will still require that you turn around. Short of between-the-legs storage like on the Trident and similar, I'm not sure how you're going to get around sitting side-saddle to get at your bulkier stuff.

Here's another idea for storage of small stuff.  Got the thought from the suggestion of the garden tool holder.
Looks like this one would fit around my waist, or a little higher on my abdomen, under the PFD.  Might replace the traditional PFD, which has pockets, with this one and get an inflatable.

Here's a more traditional tool belt:   I like the color better.  Both are available at Amazon.com.
