Emmrod worked well this weekend trolling small modified xrap ( front treble removed, one hook from back treble removed ).  Brought in three rainbows using a kayak model + 8coil ( up to 5lb rating ) tip.

If you hold a mirror up the screen it all makes sense.  ;D

Much of the verbage refers to Emmrods which are these shortened rods that make up for their length by incorporating a coil in the rod itself. Weird looking little things. Never used them but they apparently can catch fish.

I'm usually in favor of innovation for the sake of innovation, but this looks like a solution in search of a problem to me.

I've caught a lot of 30-36 inch lake trout on medium-stiff ice fishing rods, so you can certainly play big fish on a short rod.  However, those Emmrods cost about $60.  If you want to try fishing with a short rod, you can get a pretty nice ice fishing rod for a third as much.  One of the sweet things about ice fishing is that it's kind of a redneck sport, so the gear is cheap.  Orvis doesn't sell ice fishing gear.  If you want to try an ice fishing rod, get one with a screw-on base for the reel.  On really cheap ice fishing rods, the reel is usually held on with little plastic rings or cable ties, which is a pretty inadequate way to attach a reel.

However, a short rod doesn't keep the tension on a fish or absorb the shock from lunges by a fish as well as a long rod, because there is only about 1.5 feet of play in the tip of an ice fishing rod, while there is 4-6 feet of play in the tip of a long rod.  And a long rod works better than a short rod for casting, jigging, setting hooks, and just about everything else. So if you want a rod which is easy to store, you'd be better off with a regular-length telescoping rod.

if you fish out of a sit-inside sea kayak or whitewater kayak, a telescoping rod can be real handy, because you can drop it inside your kayak or stuff it inside your life vest when you come to a rapid or have to cross through surf.  I've done a lot of fishing from a whitewater kayak with a cheap telescoping rod.  For example, here we are fishing above Ladle Rapid on the Selway River at low water.  Time to fold up your rod and grab your paddle!

Sorry that was not clear.  I was assuming everyone was following my context.  How narrow minded of me.

Yea.  Emmrod.  They are great for trolling.  One can learn to cast them, but it's tough.  The fish set the hook themselves; a product of the design.  Pretty sensitive.  I use the 8 coil, 5lb model for trolling trout.  It's the lightest one they have.  I use the kayak handle too.  The kayak handle one I own is great if your into bigger fish.  I'm going to pick up a shorter lighter handle from them for trouting.

I have used an Emmrod for about ten years.
 I have the spincast model.
It is great for jigging the kelp beds for greenling and other smaller fishes, I have also landed many rockfish and a few smaller ling's from the Yak with it.
A bit hard to get used to , but after ten minutes of practice you can cast quite well with it. ( just odd the pole is no longer than me dick)
The caveate here is....you CANNOT work the fish around the bow or stern of the Yak, gotta horse 'em in to the side yer on.
