Poor boy flag pole....... I didn't want to get run over by a PB so started with a 2x2 ,an awning rod for an Rv awning ,my drill, my router some zip ties and a piece of felt from my hunting supply. Routered the end of the 2x2 roundish , drilled and slotted it for the bent end of the rod , zip tied the rod and a leash on it and tyrd the flag on, should I make it a little higher?

I have a diver down" flag on a 5.5' foot long fiberglass pole which I mount in a scupper hole in my Trident.  It whips around in an irritating manner in the wind.  I'd like a taller pole for a visibility flag for use on the ocean, so the flag will remain visible in moderate swells.  Does anybody have any suggestions for material for a pole for a pretty tall safety flag which is stiff and stable, but not too heavy?

1/4" diameter kiddie bike flag, found at your local department store that sells kids bikes.

Just yank the metal bracket off the bottom and pick your favorite mount.
Granted there are not a lot of kayak specific mounts available, I can suggest how I made mine.

Look through my pics and you can get the idea.
You will need to have access to the inside of the kayak, and be able to reach where you are putting the mount.

Cool. One thing you may want to consider is that wood swells.  If it's wedged in your rod tube tightly and then swells, it could crack the tube. Pipe insulation or PVC sprinkler pipe may be a good cheap alternative IMO.
My wife thinks fishing is merely guys wandering around like idiots swinging sticks in the air. Many of my trips prove how smart she really is.

Just put a nice couple coats of paint on the wood and that will reduce or even eliminate the chance of the wood swelling when wet.

Or soak in veggy oil and allow it to swell.  Adjust the thickness again and be done with it.

I tend to discourage people from using the traditional diver flag as a safety flag for kayak fishing.  It has the ability to really confuse people, which is a really easy way to tick off other boaters on the water.

INSAYN's suggestion is a good one.  Also, check out a store that specializes in ATV or off-road vehicle stuff.  My flag is a ~$15 ATV fiberglass whip that came with a bright orange flag on the end of it.  I zip-tied it to a mount I had laying around and it works perfectly.  I have been using the same setup for 5 years and the only thing that has changed is the flag from time to time when it gets faded or torn.

I agree on diver flag.  I used mine once and realized it was a bad idea.  I have a bamboo pole, jammed into trimmed pool noodle then jammed into a 2" PVC pipe on my crate.

I use my diver down flag when I'm snorkeling and speargunning for pike from my kayak.  A major risk of speargunning is getting run over by a [insert your adjective here] motorboater.  So I anchor my kayak next to the middle of a weed bed with a diver down flag on it, and put a buoy with a diver down flag at each end of the weed bed.  I want a different flag and pole to make my kayak more visible when I'm rod fishing in moderate swells.

Yup, that makes sense then.

I had two similar sized broken two piece rods which I combined into one whole rod.  I cut the eyes off and the foam handle fits very snugly in a Scotty mount. It breaks down for easy transport and is surprisingly stiff.

Mine fits a little loose and I was bored. I have some silicone spray ( clear coat) I plan on putting on it after the bay yak trip. I was also considering a mount to my chair for an atv flag  any takes on that?

I would not the flag too close to my seat as fighting a fish could be an issue with the flag pole location......I located my flag near the aft hatch on my PA-14 and this spot has not caused any issued to date.

Mine is a bicycle safety flag zip-tied to the milk crate that gets bungeed into the cargo space behind my seat (Elie Gulf 120xl).  I don't know if it would interfere with anything since no fish have cooperated yet by biting the hook!

I use a decent/inexpensive two piece rod, it's 8ft, and zip ties secure my flag to the guides.  If I lose or break a rod a "good" rod, I can use my safety flag pole.  A good reason get another fishing rod! Safety first;)
It has a foam handle and fits into my scupper holes nice and snug.

I feel the opposite - I like my flag as close to me. If I have to maneuver around it, I just stick my pole straight up to get the line high enough to to over it. If the flag was farther away I would have to get the line even higher.

My flag mount is a 6" length of PVC with caps on both ends. The caps have 5/16" holes drilled in them to accept the 5/16" diameter pole. I made one out of 1"PVC and pipe insulation when I was using a molded-in pole holder, but I now use a 1/2" PVC pipe that is zip tied in my crate. I just stick the flag pole through the two holes and off I go.
