Well I got out on American lake today.  Never found the Kokanee, but I was able to do a trial run on my umbrella rig.  This was just a proof of concept test, but it went well!  I am now looking for a clear golf sized umbrella.  However, just thought I would post this up as it might inspire ideas in others.   Scotty rocket launcher and a piece of PVC with the umbrella attached to it and a screwdriver pin.

My hope is that when there is enough wind I can use it to troll with or at a very minimum some forward motion for deploying the downrigger.

Kudos for the innovation. A conventional Wind Paddle sail wouldn't work?

No because I deploy my downrigger down the middle.  Difficult to explain but I attache the fishing line to the clip and then slide it forward over the tip of the hull.  It then slides under the hull  so that the line is off to the left (as in the picture) but the down rigger ball is going right down the middle. In this way I can paddle without hitting my line.   The umbrella lifts it off the hull allowing me to deploy where the wind paddle would prevent that.  I will be attaching a rod holder specifically for this and then will be able to dual wield stacking the downrigger. ;D
