Guys....I just spent a crap load of money on a drysuit.  I am really looking forward to getting out in the ocean for some bottom fishing.  I have all the fishing and safety gear I need.  Is there anyone heading out this weekend (conditions permitting) that would be willing to let me tag along?   I have not been out on the ocean in my kayak but would really like to!  I have launched a 20 foot boat out of Depoe Bay several years back but I'm really not familiar with the area.  I guess the only thing I don't have is a fish stringer thing.....What are most people using?

I really wish I wasn't so busy this weekend - I would be out at the coast somewhere for sure.  Forecast is looking really good!

Wish I could go.I use a big game fish clip, giant clothes pin looking thing.but a 1/4" cord rope with a loop on one end and a snap on the other is all you need much like a bank fishers staked out trout stringer.snap instead of a stake.

Game clip, cooler bag, stringer, burlap bag are all good options for fish management/storage.  Just make sure to never drag fish in the ocean or anywhere there might be sealions.

I hear you.  I have a PA 14.  I normally carry a small cooler on the back storage area of my kayak, mainly for lunch and bait.  I'm thinking I will leave the cooler behind for the ocean trips.  I don't need a sail on the back of my boat, and I do need a place for fish....

Good call.  Rigid coolers are not a good idea in my opinion.  They tend to raise your center of gravity.  You could get away with it on a PA14, but like you said, you'd have to deal with the wind.

Why... oh why Roy... would you ever do that when you have Sunset in your back yard?

On the other hand it makes me wonder how accurate the surf/swell forecast is. I don't think I've ever seen it so different so close apart.

I'm looking at the forecasts too, and things looking good starting Friday.  I'm itching to get out to Depoe Bay or PC, perhaps Friday.

I just use a piece of rope with a clip on one end.  I loop it through the first fish's gills and then slide the fish on one at a time.  Works good and didn't cost me any thing.  This pic was from last Friday at Pacific City.  I tried to post a report but couldn't find the new post link??  I also question the forecasts, Magic Seaweed was predicting 2 to 4' swells and they were a lot taller than 4'.  I would say that they were around 6-8' and close together.  We only got an hour of fishing in before deciding that it was too rough.  This Saturday and Sunday are looking good with 2 to 4 foot swells, let me know what day you decide to go.

Which forecast are you looking at? On Magic Seaweed for Cape Kiwanda I see the following:

Friday-5.5 at 7 seconds. You're probably going to get hammered pretty well going through the surf, both launching and landing. Also, you'd really like to see a longer duration, at least X2 the swell. Additionally you also have a pretty good wind there, 12 MPH with gusts to 15 by noon. That would be a no go in my book.
Saturday-Looks okay for 9 am but you have multiple swells in multiple directs, then it builds to 5 foot at 6 seconds by noon. Also a bit windy for my liking.
Sunday-More of the same.

There are certainly plenty of time for the forecasts to change but given what I'm looking at I'd save the drive for a better day.

Noah,

Thanks for your feedback.  I looked at the report a few days ago, and it looks like it has changed since.  I am an newbie at the surf launches, so I appreciate the warnings, and coaching.  I don't want to end up on the news!

Friday was my only day to get out there this weekend, as my other days were spoken for "hosting the in-laws".  I think the big waves might be a friendlier option!

Yeah, what Noah said.  You won't find me offshore this weekend. Here is the Oregon surf check report:
Friday: N wind 20 to 25 kt. wind waves less than 1 ft. combined
seas NW 6 ft.
Saturday: N wind 20 to 25 kt. wind waves 6 ft. NW swell 6 ft.

I had it in my head that it was going to be nice, but that must have been based off of a forecast from a couple of days ago.  That doesn't look fun.
