Since you technically landed the ling with a "hand line", it must have been over 20 pounds.

That was a nice fish. I like how you get so much enjoyment from fighting it.

Quick question...  isn't it illegal to gaff a lingcod in Washington? 

Yes it is illegal to gaff a ling in Washington ... I was using a hook attached to a line. Not a gaff attached to a pole or other device. =)

Just curious what is the difference between what you used and this flying gaff? 

The Washington regs definition of gaffing: "Gaffing Attempting to take fish by impaling fish with a hook attached directly to a pole or other device".

All I know is that the product I bought is sold as a hook and I tied the hook to a line. So I won't call it a gaff. =)

Seems legit to me. Looks like you had an epic day fishing. I see a nice cab in the tank well!
