Yes it is illegal to gaff a ling in Washington ... I was using a hook attached to a line. Not a gaff attached to a pole or other device. =)

Just curious what is the difference between what you used and this flying gaff? 

The Washington regs definition of gaffing: "Gaffing Attempting to take fish by impaling fish with a hook attached directly to a pole or other device".

All I know is that the product I bought is sold as a hook and I tied the hook to a line. So I won't call it a gaff. =)
