I’ve recently switched to a Hobie Revo 13 from a Trident 13. One of the things that I have noticed is the Revo seems to be a little wetter ride than the Trident. I am used to a bit of water coming up through the scupps, but my butt is constantly sitting in water in the Revo. This has never been an issue in the Trident. This last time out, I got some leak-through in my dry suit and soaked my fleece in the seat area. Obviously, that shouldn’t happen so therefore my Kokatat is getting inspected and serviced at Kayak Academy as we speak. It’s been 3 excellent years so far on this suit. The gaskets and socks are in excellent shape still (props to 303 protectant!) but I’m sure there are pinholes from fish flopping in my lap. I’m guessing there is some leakage at the seams to cause that much leak-through. Anyway, back to the Revo… Perhaps the seat is lower in the Revo than I’m used to in the Trident? I weigh a mere 220lbs soaking wet (pun intended).  One thing I notice that is different is that there are small scupper plugs under the seat on the Hobie. So here are my questions:

Is this normal to sit in water in the Revo?
Is this less of an issue in the Outback (less draft)?
Do you keep the scupper plugs in or out?

Take those plugs out, and put them somewhere in case you sell it someday and the buyer wants them.     You'll still get wet on launches and such, but the water will drain out instead of sitting in it all day.

Lee,

Are you talking about the screw down plugs under the seat?  I have mine screwed down and only unscrew them when I'm cleaning the kayak after use.  I will take them out and see what happens.  I guess it would be more important if going out through the surf.

Thanks for the tip.

I have both the T-13 and the Revo and yes the Revo can leave you a wet butt with what water ends up in the seat area.  The Revo seat is a few inches lower than the T-13 so it gives you the opportunity to get wet for sure.

However, if you have a sealed dry suit it isn't an issue.  If you are lake or river fishing and not in a dry suit, you are probably going to get wet anyways, it's a kayak.  Just wear stuff that is quick drying like Columbia Omni-Dry convertible pants.

The T-top option would probably be like a "Whale Tail", and yes those are probably the fastest drying pants on the planet.   ;D

yup what they said.... honestly I think they are a marketing gimmick to get a few more spendola's outta ya... got a complete set for my T15 when I first started... very soon afterwards, the plugs came out and there were fewer instances of extreme wet okole' ...or submarine butt

Another plug for removing the plugs.

The T13 hull is much deeper than the Revo13 hull in the seat area.

What others have said.  Water will ALWAYS make it into the seat area for one reason or another and the scuppers DRAIN the water, so take out the plugs.  Unless the boat is overloaded, in calm water no water should come up through the scuppers.

That's what I figured... I did pull them out and did notice water came in just from my weight, especially if the kayak is leaned to one side or the other, but as stated, it just drained back out.

Just as an update... bad news came in about the drysuit suit. I have the Kokatat T3SER (3-layer) Tropos T3 Swift Entry. They found delamination in the layers of the Tropos that they cant fix. :-\ It's getting sent off to Kokatat. Damn... I shoulda sent it off over the winter instead of waiting till summer. :crybaby2: Ill have to check on a loaner...

I suppose you could make a set of open cell foam scupper plugs to allow water to drain out, but restrict rushing water from coming in.  They would work like baffles in a race car fuel cell.
