Planning to go "camping" this weekend with the gf... Convinced her that kayak camping is the way to go! (So I can fish off it haha)...  Now all i need is a place to go haha.  Was wondering if anyone knew of any little islands off the Columbia/Willamette or someplace close to the metro area that are decent to camp on, and won't be crowded with tons of powerboaters.  Any ideas?  Thanks

Powerboats are going to be a challenge just about anywhere this weekend. I've camped on the river-right beach just below the Columbia/Willamette Confluence, just upstream of Columbia Lowlands park. With the port of Portland just upstream, it may keep the powerboats away. It wasn't the most scenic campsite, but not bad for so close to town. There were some trees for shade, and sketchy old outhouse, and even a view of St Helens if you walk up the hill behind the beach. You can see a couple pictures of it here:

There may also be camping just downstream at Caterpillar Island, but I haven't checked that out. There's also Gov't Island and some other small islands on the east end by Troutdale, but I imagine those will be covered by powerboats. Same thing with Reed Island by Washougal/Camas, plus it was underwater last I heard. You can check out the NOAA charts here, and see if something catches your eye:

Good luck & have fun!
Brian

drove past Reed Island last night, looks like the campground is out of the water. Likely to still be a soggy mess, though. Also saw a small island across from Multnomah Falls I hadn't noticed before. Looking on the NOAA map, it's labeled as Skamania Island. So there's another possibility for you.

Ended up going to Sand Island, @ St Helens... Had a great time, the fireworks show was lit off a couple hundred yards from me on the island it was awesome.  The current at that point of the Columbia was pretty strong though, made it through ok though haha.  Saw some deer on the island, got really close to one, ended up taking a couple pictures I'll repost later.  No luck on the fishing though, next time I'nm in the area I'm going to hit up Scappoose Bay
