Yakbum posted a picture recently that got me thinking about building a rod/net/gear holder for our Oasis.  Then last week, while we were out on the water in the Oasis, my wife commented that if we had a way to carry 2 rods, a net, and our safety flag, we could both cast spinners for coho this fall at Siltcoos...can't pass that up plus if I decide to fish solo out of the Oasis I will definitely need it.

I kept the rack simple and light by using Tees at the top corners and Crosses for the top middle, this gives me 4 vertical holders in the rack, pipe is 1-1/4".  Attached 2 Scotty mounts on the outside so that I can run a rocket launcher off each side with the rod coming up beside me so I can see most of it.  Then across the front I attached a bucket organizer to hold a few tools and a bonker...cheers, roger

Nice mod, Roger. It looks like you put a screw through the side of the molded in rod holders. Was this this make the mod more solid?

yes sir, I attached each Scotty mount with a zip tie at the top and bottom to hold it tight to the 1-1/4" pipe and to keep it from rotating, added a stainless screw at the top and bottom of each mount.  very solid.  cheers...

That is the screw that normally attaches the rod holder covers to the hull.

I have exactly the same bucket organizer mounted on the back of the seat of my 13' Trident.  See http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=11527.0 .  To prevent tools from falling overboard and being lost forever, I have retractors mounted on the top of the bucket organizer, and attach each tool to the organizer with a retractor.  A disadvantage of mounting a bucket organizer on the back of my seat it that it's hard for me to see what I'm doing when I grab tools and stuff them back in the organizer.  It'll be easier for you to use your bucket organizer with it mounted on your rod holder.

no, they are new screws from my stainless supply.  I needed to drill new slightly off center holes in the top and bottom of each Scotty mount (dead center there is a stiffener in the way),  the existing bolt holes in the Scotty mounts are used for the zip ties around the pipe.

the Hobie rod holder covers were moved to my PA12 and I put the screw that was holding them on the Oasis back into the hole...

can't wait to put this to use on the water!

I see.  Do those screws now serve a purpose for your mount system or are they just to plug the holes that were left when you moved the rod holder covers?  That's what Ling Ling was asking.

oops, obviously I thought he was asking about the Scotty mounts...those screws are just filling the holes in the kayak, the pipe that pushes into the molded in rod holders has 1/2" wide duct tape wrapped at two locations- bottom and top- to match the inner diameter of the holes in the yak.   you can also see that I also secured it down with the stretchy straps on the back of the kayak...cheers, roger
