Do I need a VHF radio for fishing out of Homer/Seward? Is my phone enough? I believe I am going with the Lowrance Elite 4x DSI for my fish finder.

I recommend. But to be honest, I carry it only half the time. Need to carry it more. Cell phones HATE saltwater! Lol.

OK, one more thing on my list to buy. I tried on my Mobby's dry suit on and the seals look good and it still fits but it does not have a relief zipper an new suit is also on the list although I am going to use it at first. Thanks for all the on going advice.

I have a perfect radio-sized pocket on my PFD, and never go in the salt without it holding the radio. Some of my destinations aren't cell phone friendly, or maybe it's just GCI service...

I'm shopping today for more gear, I am amazed how small and relatively inexpensive the radios are now and how expensive a plastic ram ball and other stuff is.

My wife and I have radios (new this year), and we love it. She can tell me what to do from anywhere on the water... No yelling back and forth and only half hearing the orders.  In other words,  for fishing with a group,  it's better than a cell,  plus you have that added safety of being able to reach out to other boats,  just in case.

Just ignore Michilutiiq, he takes every opportunity to be a smart Alec, even in this forum. But he is correct, we have found our radios to be very useful and now won't go out without them.

My wife had no interest in kayaking until she saw the "She can tell me what to do from anywhere on the water... ". she asked if we can be a kayaking couple. Darn. If she is serious it means 2 of every thing now and no solitude on the water. I am thinking a Hobie for her.
