I'm looking to get a new PDF I have one of the auto inflate ones now but I want one that doesn't cost 20 bucks to rearm every time
My question is on the fishing PDF's does having all those frount pockets make it harder to re enter if you take a spill  It seems like all that gear on your chest and stomach would cause problems
Any thoughts

PDF is a picture format, and will not help you float.  PFD is a personal flotation device, and it will help you float.

I have the fishing pfd from stolhquist. I have been practicing flipping my hobie outback, righting the craft and re-entry. I have probably re-entered over 50 times in the last two weeks. No issues with the pockets or my pfd mounted knife. I'm really gaining confidence in the yaks stability and my re-entries are almost muscle memory now. I don't have a specific routine, each flip is different. So I just grab where I can, right the yak, grab opposing side handle, bounce with the flotation and up in and twist. Granted I have not done it with full battle rattle, ie: milk crate, f.f., rods and holders, anchor, battery, flag, etc. I will in time though, I'm just enjoying the warm weather.

I have the Stohlquist Fisherman Highback in yellow:

It has held up well for over five years.  The smooth profile of the semi-rigid pocket ameliorates any re-entry difficulties.

Here is a link to another thread, "What's on your PFD". It has a number of interesting and useful photos.

If you train for it, the pockets shouldn't be a problem for re-entry.  I don't find it to be a problem.

I personally wouldn't want to use an inflating life jacket where there is a chance for it not to work for a sport like this.  As easy as it is to end up in the water I want my pfd to be simple and work without question every time.  The $20 recharge is enough incentive for a regular pfd for me too.

One thing not mentioned very often regarding one advantage of a non inflating PFD over one that does.

Core insulation.

That extra bit of bulk that a non inflating PFD works wonders for keeping the core warm in the wind, rain, and especially cold water.

The inflatables PFD's just don't have the insulation needed to pull this off.  They have more of a convenience factor laying flat and mostly out of the way until needed.

Well, and it doubles as a fishing vest. Keep yer knife, pliers, leader, license, etc all close at hand.

And, even if you stick your rescue knife into it freeing yourself from gear and paddle leases it will still keep you afloat. Inflatables are okay for PBs, where gear congestion is not a factor.
