I had great time fishing with good group of guys last Friday before the Sunset Bay ATOD.  We put in at the BLM ramp and rode the tide up past the 101 bridge and turned around a little bit before the tide shift because we didn't want to get to far up river.  The wind had come up which made it a lot of work getting back the launch.  Out on the we had Insyan, Captain Redbeard and crew, Amb, Ling ling, Hero?, Upnorthtex, and myself.  I managed a nice 31" chinook and a 19" jack. Ling ling also caught a nice chinook.  Here are a few pictures of the day.

I'm really glad I got to go on this trip.  It was a lot of fun and I learned a bunch about river trolling for salmon from the kayak.  The bug bit me bad enough I'm thinking about trying the Knappton troll on the Washington side of the Columbia next week.  It was great to get on the water and get some new experiences in kayak fishing.  This group of guys were really great to fish with, very helpful and willing to share information.  Everybody was looking out for each other too which impressed me the most.  It was truely a lot of fun.  Thanks guys!

We had a great time fishing with everyone. Thanks for letting us salmon newbs fish with you and learn from you. Mrs. Redbeard did get a solid nibble (not exactly a take-down... but something left teeth marks in her bait) but other than that we only caught sea-weed. We're definitely going to give it a go in some coastal rivers and eventually in the Willamette and/or Columbia this fall.

The picture of Dana's big 'nook doesn't do it justice. We showed up with our crab just as he was cutting into it at the cleaning station back at the campground, and that thing was quite a slab of meat.

Special thanks to Ling Ling for graciously sharing his expertise with us and getting our rigs tuned to where we had a shot at some fish. I think we skipped about 5 trips worth of trial and error!

I don't know why, but a jack salmon always tickles me. We used to catch a lot of them fishing for bluebacks in late September and early October  on the Siuslaw at Midway -- but that was in the 1970s when I was going to the UofO. We trolled Doc Sheltons and crawlers. Bet the same rig would take fish out of a yak.
