I'm going to be in Seaside Tuesday afternoon hanging with my sons and playing in the surf with the kayak. A helmet is highly recommended as is a clean deck free of fishing gear. Might try fishing the surf from the sand also. Anyone wants to join send me a pm and I will let ya know what time, still not sure what stretch of beach so suggestions are welcome.

My wife and I keep talking about having a "play in the surf" session but we never end up doing it. Too much of a drive to only play  ;D  Way to take advantage of your proximity to the ocean.

Fun fact: The very first time I was ever in a kayak was in (very small) surf when I was a kid.

You could drop crab pots while you are playing in the surf or fish before/after. Its not something most people are able to do for hours on end because it is very physically demanding depending on conditions and how long you wait to take a breather between waves.

Oh and thigh straps help tremendously, I can't recommend them enough. Without thigh straps its much much much more difficult to brace.

Playing in the surf is a very different workout then just busting threw and paddling out your upper abdomen gets a good burn going after two or three sets. I got some go pro footage to edit up but I'm unsure if I can post it if not Jim-dawg might be gracious enough to post it for me.

Good times!!! Surf is fun and good training. Sunday after AOTD the ocean was blown out so Erik and I found some nice white water in the tide pools where the surf and swells were coming through. We got some good video. Soon as my CPU at home is back up I will get the vids edited and posted. Not only was it a great learning experience, I had a blast!!!
