I'm noticing a lot of guys using the Deep 6 Divers in a lot of the salmon fishing videos.  I've always used a cannon ball sinker on a slider, but I can change.

I'm curious if anyone can provide any coaching on the size Deep 6, assuming there are different sizes, depths etc, and any advice they can provide on using them in the ocean for Coho/Chinook.

Thanks.

I use a 4 oz delta diver.  There is no wire to reset...it slides back into position on its own.  The main advantage is when in the current out there the diver will hold it down and not get pulled up due to the speed.  I use a line counter reel and the rule of thumb 1/2 the amount of line out is your depth..I usually start at 30ft on the counter which is about 15 ft deep.  This has been working pretty well for silvers.  Heavy lead might be better to reach the deep water where the nooks like to hang out.  If you have a line angle of 45 degrees to the water then you are roughly half as deep as the amount of line out.....that doesn't really answer the deep six question but hopefully helps.

I go very simple in the ocean.  Just a 6 to 12 oz banana weight ahead of flasher and leader.  Less drag than a diver and less hassle than a dropper weight.  It's not like you're going to be tapping bottom in a 100 fow.

I have always used a pink lady in both rivers and open water.  They always release upon a strike and they work well....

I prefer super heavy bannannas for trolling.  It gives me greater line control.  I use up to 24 oz.  mainly 8 to 16 oz.

I like the deep six's as said before when I am trolling faster.  Even with 16oz.  Slap on an 11 inch plastic flasher and you might get down to 30 ft without letting a mile of line out trolling faster than 2knts in my experience.  That's where I like the deep six's.

How many kayakers use a downrigger when trolling for salmon?  A downrigger is a pretty precise method of fishing, because it allows you to quickly adjust the depth of your lure to run it past fish which you see on your fish finder.

LOVE LOVE LOVE my downrigger...but not when I am catching pollock before I even clip the line into the downrigger.  For anything under 30 ft and where bycatch is an issue, I leave the downrigger at home.

I agree the guessing game sucks on divers and sinkers.  But if you play with it enough you start getting the feel for the depths.  And when you use heavy sinkers, I can often see my gear on the low frequency transducer.....

I'm partial to the cannonballs on paddle kayaks that don't have rudders.  Divers create a lot of drag and when that drag is at the end of a 9' rod, you spend a lot of energy just trying to keep your yak straight.

It's less of an issue if you have a rudder though you're adding even more drag to your kayak.  On a pedal yak, it doesn't seem to make a huge difference.

I use a deep 6 when fishing the ocean and b10.  When the tide is really running it has enough resistance to prevent me from turning away from it.
