Dirk1730 and I went out to destruction island earlier this week for some late season Lings and Rockfish. We'd been out there before and had awesome fishing but had launched from the mouth of the Hoh river which made it a long 6-mile pedal both ways...plus the Indians didn't take kindly to our "trespassing" on their reservation and left a nice boulder with a nasty note under it on the hood of my jeep...at least they left the air in the tires.

This time we went hard-core and lowered our gear and yaks down over a 100' cliff to the beach below directly in front of the island...from this point, the Island was only 3.5 miles offshore.

It was a looooong surf zone to punch through with lots of rocks lurking just below the surface but it sure was nice to cut 5 miles off the round trip. We both knocked out limits of Lings, Cabs and Rockfish before the wind picked up and made it tough to fish. A 4-5 ft swell from the NNW and a 15mph wind from the SSE wade it a washing machine and the island offered no protection.

I've never worked so hard for a limit of bottom fish, but it was a pretty cool adventure.

Check out the video:

Great video Gordon. Thanks for sharing with us all.

Any vid of the "cliff drop" ? Or getting back up the cliff ???
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

That has got to be one of the best videos of our sport yet.
As of July 12th, I am, officially,  retired.

Those are the kind of videos that make you look forward to the weekend so to hit the water.
I kept thinking you were in the clear and more waves kept coming.  You made it look easy though.

I used to think that Bigfoot might exist. Then I saw the reality shows where they are looking for them.  Now I am certain they don't

That is seriously impressive. Way to handle the long surf zone (both directions!) in the Hobie. What an adventure! And lights-out fishing to reward you. How cool is that?

Much respect!

I, too, would love to know how you managed getting the yaks back up.  :)

Pretty simple operation...we just lowered all the gear and Kayaks down over the cliff on a heavy climbing rope and then used an adjacent creek drainage to walk (climb, crawl) down. We pulled everything back up the same way. We stuffed the boats full of soft gear like seats, PFDs, drysuits, etc... I used my jeep to "winch" them right up. One of us was up top and the other down below and we used our radios to communicate back and forth.

I wish I had taken some video of that operation, but at the time I just wasn't thinking of it...would have been cool to have the GoPro on the boat while it was going down...next time.

Great editing!  I couldn't even see you Huli!   I missed a great fishing trip, but thanks for capturing it on camera!
