Hello all, recently joined and looking forward to a new form of "on the water fun!" My wife of 12 years recently asked me what I thought about getting into kayaking. I about crashed the car! I have a power boat and a drift boat and love to fish and spend time on the water, so I was all for this new adventure. I have a friend that owns two sit down in kayaks that he will let me use. They have not seen water for 10 or so years, so I think we will take them to a local pond for a test run before trying anything more. Anyone that wants to give me a few pointers before our first trip, I am all ears. Thanks.

Welcome to the site mcmudpuddle.

Where are you located?  If you're close to anyone on this board you might be able to test out some sit on top kayaks as well.  They're a little slower than traditional kayaks, but they are much easier to use, more stable, and more fishing friendly.

I'm right around the corner between Newberg and Yamhill. Sounds like critical mass in Yamhill County.   ;D

Edit - In case you need some basic supplies, Joes tent sale starts today. I'll be stopping by on the way home....

I wonder if Oregon membership is now larger then Washington membership.  Seems like the greater Portland area is pretty well represented on this site now.

Hi McMudpuddle,  I'm fairly close to you I live across the street from King City on 99W.  I fish out of a SIK (sit in kayak), and I really enjoy it  I frequent the Tualatin, because Cook park is really close to my house.  I'm planning on going tonight around 6:30, and then again tomorrow around the same time.  The Tualatin is a great place to practice and get comfortable with your yaks, it's super slow moving and has lots of fallen trees and structure to fish around (also limits the powerboat activity).  Lots of beaver, herrings, otter, ect.  What is the length and width of your two kayaks?

Thanks for the nice welcome!
I will be picking up the kayaks over the weekend and I can give a better description, so far Ive just seen them in a rack in the guys shop. They look kinda old school but well kept.

Hey bluewaterworld Took my first ride last night. Stealheader was nice enough to give me an opportunity to paddle for a few hours. I had a blast. We put in at Rodgers landing in Newberg and went up and around Ash Island. I've been there a number of times in the sled, but seeing it from water level gave a whole new perspective. Beaver, Herons some kinda duck looking bird. Very cool stuff!
