Against my better judgement, I am planning to make a run down to Homer on Sunday since it's the start of the new month and I am going to make an effort to keep my king streak alive.  I know I am traveling at least one, maybe two weekends this month so I have to go when I can.   Besides its opening day for halibut!  lol.  Zero expectations of catching a halibut though I will likely try for a bit at least trolling near the bottom.

Good Luck Rudy, hope you do well, I'm on the beach until the Winter King Derby. I may take a Seward or Whittier run before then if the weather is superb but the winter Homer run is just a fish to far. Now saying that I know you will get your quota of 20 pounders and I will get sucked into the vortex again.

Not me -- it's the annual Ski for Women that morning, after which I collapse, watch Carlos watch the Super Bowl and  I do my cookery thing and drink wine. Go get 'em Rudy.

So I skip the Super Bowl to try and land my February King.  The weather is colder than forecast hitting -8 deg F in Sterling.  I was hoping it's not 20 deg colder than the forecast in Homer like it was for Sterling.

Get on the water around Noon for a 1pm High tide.  Not much action on the sonar until about 3pm when I start seeing bait stack up in front of the condos.  The water was siltier than usual but I began to hit some nice Pacific Cod and even a decent yellow fin sole.

The weather in homer was around 30 deg so it wasn't too bad until the winds started picking up.  Probably maxed out at 15 mph winds but it was chilly!

Still how can you complain?  29.5 inches and as fat as any winter salmon I have ever caught.  So I missed the Super Bowl but managed a nice king plus another species for AOTY points!  I'll catch bigger fish but its good to get on the board so early!!!

Nice King.  Looks tasty.   I'm jealous, been eating frozen for the last two months.

Rudy, does the water always look that calm around homer?  Looks like an easy launch that day!  Great photos, and thanks for the update!

Pretty much. As long as there is an east component to the wind, I find you are ok to 20knts and 4 or 5 ft forecast in the bay.  It's steep and no fetch for breakers to build unless it's a west wind.

The video, the conditions were as bad as I ever fish there. The wind switched to southeast meaning some of it can sneak around the corner.  It's usually a lot flatter.

The spot location forecast is pretty accurate for the spit.
