Let me put it this way:  I was planning on taking my older boys surfing for their birthday on Thursday but cancelled because the swell's too big....

This is interesting. Do either of you care to explain what led you to your conclusions?

I glanced at Magic Seaweed for Thu/Fri at Lincoln City and the primary and secondary swells look brutal; I wouldn't consider them good days to be on the water.

What are you guys looking at?

My kids can handle up to a 6' swell.  That's 10-12' faces.  I'm seeing 10-12'swell in the forecast.  Even Depoe will likely be a washing machine.

If you don't have a lot of experience reading swell forecasts and translating them to what it actually looks like on the ocean but still have some experience fishing on the salt, I would recommend you look for a swell of about 3 ft or less, winds of less than 10 kts, and wind waves of 1 ft or less before you make plans to go.  Just my $0.02

No Bueno!

These are swells.  Depending on the direction and location you multiply by 1.5 to 2.0 to get the actual wave height.

To get the hang of it look at the video camera in PC not sure of the link someone should chime it in, then see what the forecast is calling for after a while you will get it down. Or do what I do wait for spot to say he's going and try to keep up with him ;D . I have made the trip there and not went out , but I'm 20 minutes or so away.just have a backup plan in one of the rivers or bays.

If Friday's conditions were predicted to look anything like Monday the 16th then it might be a safe bet. Otherwise your reaching for the Darwin award.

Monday might be OK early in the morning before the wind picks up, but it's not a given.  Three foot wind chop can be doable, but can certainly challenge you if seasickness is a concern.

3 foot wind wave at Depoe will make for a bumpy day. Since all the waves bounce back off the rocks it will be a washing machine out there. Doable, yes. Easy like a cake walk, no.

The winds are actually looking to be offshore from the northeast so it shouldn't be the wind wave washing machine that is commonly seen in Depoe Bay. However, that doesn't mean that this weekend is a good bet for an easy ocean outing. The forecast has been getting worse and it's a narrow window at best.
