Some interesting stats/estimates for the Columbia Springer fishery, through the early part of March...

I'll provide some info about getting setup for anchor fishing for salmon.

Great!

I've done a fair bit of kayak and powerboat anchor fishing for springers. The etiquette is fairly simple. Don't cross your anchor line over another boat's anchor line and you'll be fine. Crossing anchor lines is a serious issue for a kayak angler because of our low mass. If you've crossed an anchor line and that boat picks up and moves at a minimum its going to drag you upstream and more than likely its going to flip you. Worst case scenario is you get tangled in the line so if you are going to anchor fish for springers have a good safety knife on your body because the spring flows on the outgoing tide on the Columbia/Willamette are no joke.  Other than that most of it is common sense. You want to be in line with everyone else so if you or they hook a fish you won't get tangled in their gear. Along the same line use at least 30 lb mono on your leader so you crank the drag down to prevent the same issue.

I usually try to be the first there to set the line and if I'm not I'll take the inside or outside of the hogline to reduce any potential problems. When someone is dropping anchor above me I decouple the anchor line from the kayak and hold it in my hand just in case they tangle with me I can just let go and not get dragged under. An additional item to consider is that pulling your anchor can be challenging to impossible  from a paddle kayak at the bottom of the outgoing tide.

Other than that the lures and configurations (wrapped kwikfish or maglips) are essentially the same you would run from a powerboat.

Thanks for the info.  The intimidation factor really comes from being in a kayak and anchoring up close to the masses of PBs; I've always tried keep my distance.  I wasn't really sure of where to anchor up (spacing wise) and what special considerations you might want to take into account: You pretty much covered it so thank you.

Video it!!! I'm always interested in techniques from elsewhere.  As much fishing as we do here in AK, it seems like we are always behind the times.  Post here and/or at NA's website!!

Yes, a video would be great!  I'm hoping to drive from Montana to the coast at the beginning of May for the May Day events around Tillamook, but I can't make it to the seminar on March 19th.

Videos are always a tough proposition.  The shops let us use their facilities because it generates foot traffic and familiarity.  If we posted videos, a certain percentage of those attending would skip it, knowing there'd be a video later.

I know that's not fair to you out of towners but Jeff and I are playing with some ideas that may accomodate everyones needs and still please our sponsors.  Probably won't be available soon though....

If you dropped their name a lot and showed some of the great facility geared toward the kayak angler, it could get them more business in the long run.

I have to work on Thursday evening.  I really want to go to this event.  A video of the event and a couple minutes highlighting NA PSC kayak fishing products and the stores focus on kayak fishing should be a win win for everybody.

Every time one of these comes up, people ask for a video, but I think there has only ever been 1 made.

I went to last years seminar with an eye on filming the event to share with NWKA. It would not be an easy task . You would need at least 2 cameras and a very high quality sound system to be able to get the speakers original presentation and all of the many questions the presenters are peppered with throughout the entire show. A Go-Pro wouldn't even begin to cut the mustard.
Perhaps if you were a professional videographer you might have the equipment to do this event justice. But by actually being there you don't miss too much of the many fine points that are presented by participants. And the free beer is a nice touch. As well as meeting up with old acquaintances, make new plans with new friends , and just having a great time with like minded folk.
If you have ever watched a political debate on TV you know that you miss a lot of what is really happening on the set...questions ,comments, and more.
Same thing with this seminar--- you really need to be there in person to get the full benefit.
As many people as we have in the PDX area--this clinic should be standing room only. The info is that good and a good time is had by all. If you can---"make it happen".

Jeff and Mark must have 3 or 4 GoPros between them.  I say we just make them give their talk using some sort of selfie helmet.
