Dustin------ have you ever tried a lip gripper instead of that gaff you're using ?

You might give it a try to simplify landing fish.

Nice ling --- by the way.
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

Nice fish! And excellent redemption. My heart sank when it leapt out of the yak.

I haven't tried the lip gripper yet. That is something I should invest in. Normally I can just grab the jig and release the fish or string it. I was using my salmon rod in this video and felt like the Jig was going to fling back at my face at any moment. Longer arms or a shorter pole are good if not using a net. Thanks for the tip.

Sweet. Boy that's nerve wracking even watching other people trying to land an uncooperative fish!  Way to get it done!!!!!

I wish the ocean had been that way atleast one day over here. As for the gaff, a small net works best for me. Plus in Wa it think we have some liberal law against gaffs for ling. Nice fish and looks like a fun fight.

As for the gaff, a small net works best for me.
When I started lake trout fishing, I had a modest sized net.  But I started catching a lot of fish which were significantly longer than the net.  I'd jam the net over the fish's head and try to hold it in the net, but way too often the fish would hook its tail on the rim of the net and catapult itself out of the net.  This resulted in repeated netting attempts and some lost fish.  So I got a bigger net.  And I would say that a BIG net works best for me.  Particularly since I'm lousy at using a gaff.
