Nice video with some great camera work from the Bon Chovy fishing crew. Love the purple and green rainbows of fresh chinook!

Nice!  That rod looked sorta weird the way it had some flat spots.  Definitely going to be trolling more fly gear this year.  Not sure I fish enough to get a complete mooching set up like I think these guys were running!

Camera work was great. Not enough fishing for my tastes.  But definitely adds to the quality when you can get great HD shots of B-roll footage.

Crazy Canucks and their center pin salmon setups (a.k.a. mooching reels).    Why are those so popular there and not popular at all here?

I've never understood the allure. The puny little handles on those reel are not what I would want when battling a big salty nook.

I think it would be a blast to catch a big king on a centerpin!

Looks like fun! But on the video production... the shallow DOF is a great effect, but when every cut involves a focus rack or two it's a bit much. Just IMHO.

Still, cool video!

They're a lot of fun. I have a 10'6" set up that I try to use as much as I can. Those big rods load up differently and the mooching reel is just simple. It is a challenge but we are fishing from kayaks! Who says we wouldn't love that! :laughing7: If more people gave 'em a shot I think they'd like 'em.

I've been out with those guys. They are great. And you can't argue with a name like Bon Chovy!

gorgeous fish...Zee, didn' you do a small explanation some years back on the science of the long parabola and it's strength inherent it those rods?

That was probably Ron. Dude was waaay smarter than me. ;D My explanation why I like them is more feel based. Simply I like things that you can store energy in and have them return that energy. A good snappy skateboard deck returns big ollies after you stomp down and load the tail. A good flexible surfboard or snowboard loaded through a turn explodes out the other end. A good fiberglass paddle pops energy out the last half of the stroke and a good parabolic rod, it gets loaded by the fish and the rod lifts it back up through a long motion.

With a long parabolic rod I think you have a better chance of the hooks staying in because there's so much more energy loaded through the distance of the curve of the rod. When it comes to barbless fishing I really like all that bend.

Man, if that vid doesn't make you want to get up off the toilet and go fishing, your heart is as cold as ice.

Yeah my ideal rod is a nice bendy 10.5' medium action. The big issue for solo fisherman is you can't net the damn fish with a rod that long! I settle for a 9' and just really concentrate on keeping that tip high to use the full action of the rod.

I am still trying to decide if that was intentional.  It looked like they were using a DSLR to film the video and with the low light, probably a low F stop.  It also may have been one where you constantly have to focus.  My older one was like that.  It was a great video though. I really need to catch a salmon now.
