I've never kayak before in my life!  But a friend convinced me to buy an Ocean Kayak trident 11..... and I'll be taking it out for the first time this weekend.  Hopefully you'll won't see me on the news at 11pm.  I bought a wet suit,  diving boots, pfd,  ... and a few basic things,  but I'll be purchasing more fishing gear as I grow into the sport. Thank you for all that this forum has provided! !

Welcome - and please take your boat out on nice calm freshwater lakes for a bit of practice before you tackle the salt...  It does take some time getting comfortable in the boat.

Hi 999

From one noob to another, welcome to the forum. From a paddler with a few miles under the keel, and more importantly, a few extra vehicular activities, I'll share what I learned the hard way about staying "off the news."

Get your boat, paddle and pfd and find a safe place to play. Start off 3' shallow, and tip over.  Figure out where the hull gives up. Get used to falling off in different directions. Then go out to 10' and do it again. Learn to love your pfd and how get back aboard. Then bring the boat over with you and learn to flip it. 2 hrs of going nowhere will keep you going for a lot of miles.

The years thunder by. The dreams of youth grow dim where they lie on the shelves of patience....which shall it be: bankruptcy of purse or bankruptcy of life?  - Sterling Hayden, Wanderer

You say that you have never been in a kayak before and that you are going to make a saltwater trip your 1st time out. You might want to follow the advice offered by BogFrogDawg . I try not to be a safety cop--- but I also hate to see new folks do stupid things that affect all of us. Be smart dude...........get used to how your boat handles before you try difficult water. You are not invincible.........
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

Great advice BobFrogDawg, I'll definitely play in shallow before attempting to venture out.

I just received my first kayak on tuesday. I have doNE a bit of paddling before in California but no fishing out of it. So I will be taking mine to the pond on saturday to fish for bass and work my way up to the ORC. Also don't forget to get your invasive species permit before you go.

Happy paddling!

Welcome. I also have had a Trident 11 for four years now and really like it. Be careful out in those bays because the tide can really rip and the wind blows hard sometimes. You might try heading up to some place like Detroit or Green Peter for some first time fishing experiences and self rescue practice.

So, first time out was a success!! With the help of MOJO, my friend and I fished toward the south jetty for a few hours, until I got a little nauseated.   We had to paddle again the tide, because we left later than anticipated.   But overall,  it was a BLAST !
