More details about prizes and such should be forthcoming.

This is a derby where everyone enters for a nominal fee.  I thought $20 bucks.  The real money comes in what i think is the "calcutta" part.  The night before the derby, there is a dinner.  All the boats and kayaks go up for auction.  Whoever "buys" that vessel in the auction takes the majority of the pot.  So if you want to win money on the fish YOU catch, I had to pay $50 or something like that to buy my kayak!  I had to actually outbid someone for it.  The good news, kayaks go for less than boats becasue with one rod the odds are less.  That bad news, on a per rod basis, the kayaks seems to get bid up more due to some novelty factor.

I have entered this derby twice.  First year I took the "gal next door" from my Kenai school days. She manages to land the first and I believe only non-powerboat king to date in what I think was 17 years of the derby.

Pictures:

Me netting her fish.  Notice the platform of choice for offshore fishing...My Mini-x

Tad long at nearly 15 minutes, but you want to watch a person who has never caught a king...let alone off a kayak, and me being stupid trying to net the fish and break rods...it'll be entertaining.  Does show how fast a king will tow a kayak.  It was her third time in a kayak I think.  The first day she used a pescador 12 that she bought the day before the derby.

Looking at that fish makes me want to go but I just don't have any time in my leave bank. I am still in for the NWKA derby, I took 10 days off for that event.

I'll be there - thinking of going down a day early to hit the water with fewer PB's on hand.

AM Thursday, looks like it may be damp this weekend, but seas OK.

I am thinking to head down tonight, fish Friday to shake out my early season mistakes, and be ready for SAT tourney.

Anyone else going to be on the water tomorrow (FRI) ?

I'm going to try and head out early but we will see.  Probably won't have time to fish. Saturday looking marginal. Sunday better. It's shaping up like 2012 when I think a south wind allowed kayaks to get out but tractor launch for powerboats was too much and they postponed. I couldn't make the next day. I'm fishing regardless somewhere!!!!!

Quick note for those coming down -  Observations aroudn 2PM 5/15 at WG and AP:  Wavees 1-2 breaking north to south along beach, wind about 10 -15 from north.   No boats or Yaks visible from WG and only one small craft on the water off AP tractor launch, where wave breaks were a bit higher -- Only two trailers parked there going into high slack.

Rain spitting off and on.

Hoping for the wind to die overnight for the AM Calcutta AP King derby!
