Why is Whiskey Gulch so good for kings? Answer....

So I know of several folks now that have tried their hand at kings at WG with limited success.  It is super hard to fish in a new area until you actually gain some confidence that fish are actually there.  Most of us "Alaskans" wouldn't even think about fishing kings in saltwater here in southcentral Alaska. So the comfort of seeing a thousand anglers in your hole ripping out 10 fish that you can see isn't there.

So a group called kintama research did an acoustic study of the routes traveled by sockeyes and chinook in the inlet. (side note: Who can tell me what kintama means without googling it in my native tongue, Japanese?)  I could watch something like this all day long if it was live. 

White lines are kings.  Red lines are sockeye.  Hit the play button at the top to see the routes the fish took.  the back half of the data shows more kings traveling in the lower inlet.  Virtually ALL of them cruise the shoreline at WG & Deep CR.

It's fairly common knowledge give the battle between sportfisherman and east side commercial set netters, but at least for me, knowing fish are around and having confidence in that information I think ups my likelihood of catching fish significantly.  I know it shouldn't matter but it does for me.

I learned it as street/slang, but I think that adds "golden" to the more common meaning?  Maybe they're both the same?

Wow - that is some nice research - did you have some inside lines on the crew at gold b@lls research to find that ?
