Bigger than average kokanee

In most lakes in Montana, an 11 inch kokanee is a Boone and Crockett fish.  But in the Regulating Reservoir near Helena, the kokanee are quite a bit bigger.  Here is a 15 inch kokanee I caught today.  By the end of the summer, you can catch 16-18 inch kokanee in this reservoir.



Old-timers talk of the considerably bigger kokanee which it used to be possible to catch in nearby Holter Reservoir and Hauser Reservoir.  That fishery is gone now, gobbled up by walleye imported by bucket biologists.

Kokanee taste (not surprisingly) a lot like salmon, and are excellent cooked and excellent smoked.
