So tragic and our condolences go out to Dino and the rest of his family. May Roland always have tight lines and many full stringers as he kayaks the heavens above.

Dino & Edwin - I am very sorry for your loss. May the sorrow that you carry be lightened by the many great memories that you must share. I knew Roland only from the couple of times I ran into him at ORCs, but he was obviously a man of great warmth and loved his friends and family. My prayers are with you.

To the NWKA friends who were there with Roland, my prayers are with you also - to be a part of such a tragedy is also very emotional. I am thankful that you were there to support each other.

Hello Brothers,

I'm still @ Shelter Cove too and just so sadden by this news,,, I had met Roland in passing over the years, but finally got the chance this year in Florida to really talk to him…

Like it's been said before, once you meet him, you'll never forget him… So Grounded, so real, like he had some sort of understanding that just transcended a warm and understanding of whomever was in his presence...

Tragic loss y'all, and Dino,  I have no words my friend other than I'll be seeing you soon…

Thoughts and prayers to you all,,,

Thank you Roland, you'll never be forgotten and give Mooch a Pinch for us….

I haven't been active here on NWKA in quite a while, but I saw a post on Roland's death on the Arima boat owners site and wanted to add my condolences to his family and friends.

I was fishing offshore at Tabletop on Thursday when I heard the first responder communications on VHF channel 16.  My heart sank when I heard there was an unconscious kayak angler on the beach.  Reading through the thread, he seems like he was a terrific guy who was taken from the world way too soon.

What happened?  What caused his death?  What can other kayak anglers learn from this unfortunate accident?

Obviously just speculation,  but I feel like something went wrong medically, cause of death is still pending a determination.

"Roland was not immediately faced down in the water when his kayak capsized, he was not even in his kayak. He was preparing to launch from shore when his kayak flipped. He was standing and requesting assistance to help retrieve his kayak and gear when he collapsed. He was quickly pulled to shore by friends on shore that were also members of our HOW team that had come up to fish the Halibut opener, they quickly began CPR. He had been sick for a long time, but he would not let it slow him down. He has had an ongoing medical condition but cause of death is still pending an autopsy."
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.  --Mark Twain
