What happened?  What caused his death?  What can other kayak anglers learn from this unfortunate accident?

It feels a bit "early" to be asking these questions ...

I saw it on FB the night before I left for Shelter Cove and couldn't believe it....

I look forward every year to seeing Roland and Dino and Paul and Dana and all the other NWKA guys up there...

Always so friendly and awesome to be around.

RIP brother...I will miss you and think about you everytime I am at Shelter Cove.

Sincerely,

Jim

It is too early, but I can end it. There is no "take away" from this tragedy. He had the experience, correct gear, and surf conditions weren't awful. He tried not to let his health conditions stand in the way of his love of the sport and being on the water with those who he cared for and those who cared a lot for him. Sometimes it just doesn't turn out the fucking way you draw it up.

Two things I came away with regarding how and where "Ro" took his last step.

1. It was quick, with no long drawn out painful injuries, debilitating handicaps, or need for long term life support.
2. It was where he loved to be, doing what he loved to do, with those he love to spend time with most.

His maker could have taken him at anytime, or anywhere else, but chose this serene and beautiful place to take him that day.   :'(

"Ro", may the "pork chops on a stick" be as awesome where you are, as they are down here buddy!

Exactly....  Roland was a great man and I wish I knew him better.  We did a number of HoW events together, we chit-chatted here and there and he was my go to guy when my wife's POS RAV4 was burning oil.   ;D  Always friendly, smiling and there to offer a hand.

I think Lee said it best on Facebook when we think about Ro's family "There are no words that fit this, but we're here for you."

RIP Roland.
