I.m planning on  fishing Pacific City on Saturday and Sunday(Memorial Day Weekend) if conditions allow.  I was wondering if anyone else will be fishing there?  It would be nice to have some company.

Little Cos and I may be down there.  For now, Saturday, Sunday and Monday look promising.  We will pick a day as we get closer.

Hopefully you guys can make it down.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the ocean will behave.  I had too much fun last time I was over there.  I can"t wait to get back out.  We ate all of our Lingcod and need some more.

Be cautious out this weekend as we have a fairly strong secondary swell coming from the same direction.

I appreciate the heads up about the secondary swell. I'll look at the conditions before going out. I'm hoping a few others will show up to fish. I know it'll probably be crazy, but I have to take advantage of the long weekend.

Hey Michael,

What reports, website or charts are you looking at that would show a secondary swell?

Thanks for the advice as always.

On Saturday the secondary swell is forecast at 1.7-2.5', other days it's bigger.

Any issues with the big tide range, other than being sure to park plenty high on the beach?

Dave

Just be safe out there.
4.5' Primary and a 2' secondary coming from the same direction with a similar 8-10 second interval can become pretty big. Just be safe! Stow your stuff and wear helmets if you go. Depoe would be better choice if its not closed to small craft.

It's certainly doable, but those two swells will periodically line up, which means set waves will seem like a 6.5 ft swell, possibly resulting in 8' high breaking waves.  I'm not trying to scare anyone, and I'd probably go out if I didn't have something else planned.  Just make sure you're always ready for the conditions you're getting into.  Watch the waves for awhile to time your entry and exit between sets.

When doing a surf launch, take your time and watch several sets of waves. There will be a definite pattern, and some of the patterns take awhile to be evident. I try to keep an eye on the sets while I'm getting set up, and for I watch the waves for at least 5 minutes before I launch. Doing that will give you a chance to pick up on the doubled up swells and other patterns.

I am not especially experienced in kayak surf launches, but I've had a lot of experience in SCUBA surf entries - being rag-dolled with a tank on your back is not real fun...

I'm heading over there tonight. I'll get there probably around 01:00 tomorrow morning. I'd still like to go out after evaluating conditions if it looks doable. I'm not sure how early I'll be going out. It'll depend how far I make it tonight. I'm going to try for Sunday also. If it doesn't work out it still beats work.

It appears everyone  made the right call evaluating the surf conditions here at Pacicic City.   I now have a good unserstanding of the secondary swell. I had good intentions of going out today. The wave sets were very stacked up close together and often would double up. I had to listen to my inner voice and let caution prevail. I know I could have gotten out, but was worried about the ride in. I'm going to see what it lookslike tomorrow. The only thing I accomplished today was getting a new Coast Guard Indspection sticker.
