Intro and Straights report

ColdWater Steve here.  I've been surfing, fishing and exploring the PWN since I was a kid and jumped into Kayak fishing about 4 years ago. First post on the board so hello to all.

I'm running a Hobie Outback with turbo fins and the larger sail rudder. Pretty standard for those on Puget sound and offshore.

Spent last Saturday with my son working the kelp off Twin River with no wind and a slack tide. Lots of cabazon and a few small lings but no keepers.

Yesterday I was blown off pillar point by the 25 knot winds. never got past the river mouth, should have gotten up earlier.  I was targeting Halibut in the flats approaching the first big drop and about 120'.
The locals in skiffs were bringing in true cod and a lings. Everyone complaining about the lack of sizable Halibut.
Left Pillar point about 5 and stopped by John wayne marina in sequim to see a guy in a Native come in wit a 25 lb halibut he caught in the windless bay. Good place to to be if you were kayak fishing on the straights.

Also checked in on Murdoch Beach (DNR camp). This is a nice little cove with some good potential off the kelp. Well protected from the wind also. Any one fish here?

One more try for Halibut next weekend - who's going out?

I'm based in Ballard (Seattle neighborhood) and put out at Shilshoal after work when the Salmon are running.

A pleasure to e-meet you. I'm David, wearer of the infamous sombrero, and I live in Queen Anne and also like to launch at Shilshole when the salmon are running.

I've fished the straits via yak for butts several times last year - at Freshwater Bay - and didn't get as much as a nibble, but I'm thinking of trying it again maybe for a day next weekend, if the weather allows. Any interest in joining up next weekend?

And now I'm REALLY itching to try Freshwater Bay again.

I just read that the current leader of the Port Angeles Halibut Derby caught a 107.9 pounder yesterday at Freshwater Bay.
