We were 3-4.5 miles from the beach, but good fish have been caught as close as 2 miles out.
5 miles offshore is not that far up here either. With some guys putting in 20+ mile days.

It was great to finally meet Jeff and Mark and to push offshore with some of the best kayak fishermen I'll ever know. It was a team effort all around, coming together to share gear and info, then spreading out to rake the bottom and find the fish and work until we all had a shot. It's a trip I'll always remember.

All of these fish were caught in less than 150 ft of water. Unfortunately, the specific bait will remain classified, but big, oily presentations seemed to do the trick.

Salmon bellies soaked or not soaked in Pro Cure butt juice, tuna bellies, live sand dabs, large herring, large squids, hake, petrale sole and recently 12" sardines brined w/scent have all worked for me on my yak.  Most of mine have been in 200ft+, but I have gotten them in less than 200ft with 116ft being the shallowest.  I have some 16-18" big jack smelt I will be trying this year.

I recently came across this method of threading bait on the rig that looks like it will produce good results. a good technique

I know it's late but here's the last of my report for this thread.

That Saturday was a day I will not forget for a long time. After I lost my first fish at my kayak that was probably in the 40 to 50 lb range I baited up another ****** with a bit of ***** on my hooks and decided to go see what Bryce was up to. He had moved off about a couple hundred feet to the north. Shortly after joining him and dropping my line to the bottom, he was hooked up! Then I was hooked up again! Then Mark was hooked into an epic fight!! Then Bill!! Then Todd!!

People who know me and my association with this group have asked me repeatedly, " Are you guys F' ing Crazy?" followed by "I can't F'ing believe those guys have the nads to go out and actually catch butts on those little things"

Keep it up guys. Things like this do far more for our sports benefit than faking the catch of a goliath grouper.

Lol!!

I almost forgot, I have a couple more pics in the gallery I haven't shared yet.

My fish from Saturday

Bill's Fish

The paddle in...

Remnants of our haul that day loaded into an unfortunate kayak picked for hearse duty.  The pale lingcod skull sitting ontop of a halibut carcass was actually in the belly of my halibut!

The meat from Mark and I's fish piled up for transport, mine in front, his in back. Bill is the MAN!!

Zach wasn't too pleased to find that we had borrowed his kayak and filled it with fish carcasses. =)

He must be young. I come across a clean kayak and with very few exceptions my first thoughts are OCD then noob. It's should be an honor to have such fish mojo bless his kayak. Kids these days. Sheez. Lol.
