I'm thinking of heading down for the day on Sunday with a great weather forecast.  If anyone is interested, I wouldn't mind some company.

Where do you launch Sliver point or the needles?

My plan was from Tolovana because it's closer to my ling cod spots.  The only downside is the beach is not protected, but with a 2-3' swell, it should be doable.

Silver Point would actually be closer, but I'll take the easy ramp down the beach.

Do you have a dory launch permit? Or wheel it down? Just getting into kayak fishing. Plan on launching by the needles and ride the rip out.

Curiousity question for you Oregoniods...  Since your beaches are off limits to driving at Cannon Beach, do you have some sort of permit that allows you to go drop a boat off, or do ya have to park up off hte beach and haul it by hand?  You'd have a pretty fair walk from Tolovana up to those Needle rocks...

Went down to the police Dept. And got a dory launching permit. You have to give them a call first. And let then know your driving on the beach and launching. Best to leave permit on dashboard when you go out.

Hi Mojo I went over to the police Dept. It's behind city hall. Asked if I could get a dory permit to launch a kayak. They needed my truck lic. number and filled one out for me. Good for a year. Cost FREE

I have the dory permit for launching our dory 8)

I don't plan on driving on the beach for my kayak.  the ramp at Tolovana has a creek flowing next to it, so it's hard sand all the way.

Have you launched by the needles before?  I'd recommend you head down there at a really low tide and map our the rocks.  There are a couple rocks that will be just under the surface depending on the tides.  It can definitely be the best place because the rock protects the beach from the NW swell, but it's not without its challenges.

I haven't taken a kayak out at the needles. But have surfed it for years. I know the wash rocks your talking about. And they do knock down the swell. Sounds like a good place to launch.  Thanks for the info.

The first rule of thumb is don't' launch on a deteriorating weather forecast.  Well, I had to relearn this rule Sunday.  The forecast mid week was perfect, the forecast on Saturday afternoon wasn't.  I decided i'd try it anyway.

I made it out okay (only got slammed by one breaker, but stayed upright) and salmon fished up to the whale rocks.  By the time I got there, the wind had picked up to the point it was unfishable.  Now I had to work my way back against the wind.  The surf was not kind to me on my way back in.
