I was hoping to get some ideas....we are moving within about 20 minutes of downtown Portland and I want to live a in neighborhood to convenient to kayak fishing ( a good launch and close to the bite). Maybe on the Willy close to Sellwood?  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Is money an object?
You say you need to be twenty minutes of downtown, but how many minutes from fishing / kayak launch do you need to be?

I just moved into Southwest (Garden Home) and I'm happy with it. And this is coming from someone who lived two blocks from the Willy for a few years and could easily wheel my kayak down to the river right from my garage. It isn't next to the water but there are homes available that have garages, plenty of parking, and it's easy to get to many different places. There are lots of fishing boats on trailers in my neighborhood.

I bought a house in Camas but haven't move in yet. About 4 miles to the Columbia launch, 1/4 mi to Lacamas Lake 2 hours to the Ocean. Pretty good schools. 10 minutes to the airport and 20 minutes to downtown PDX. It's a mill town, but the people who live there say it doesn't smell bad.

I second outer SW.  It has a very suburban feel, but garages, parking and I am only 10 minutes from downtown, 10 from Sellwood and 10 from George Rodgers.  I used to live in Sellwood and I loved it their too.  Depending on where you live parking can get a bit tight.  They are getting a max line in a bit too.

Yes it smells.  I lived up on NW Fargo behind the mill before moving to Washougal to finish life through High School.
Camass stinks to high hell until you get used to it.   ;D

My dad retired from that mill and always said the stench was the smell of money.   >:D

A third for SW Portland :) Jeff, Nate and a I actually live within about a 1/4 or each other, but I was here first :) It has the right mix of being close to downtown, but generally affordable enough that you can buy a decent place with a garage. You're also a few miles closer to the coast.
