I'm negotiating a hall pass for the weekend (fingers crossed).  Was thinking of hitting the Nehalem for crabs and early chinook.  Anyone else fishing this weekend?

I was down at Knight Park on the Salmon River yesterday, just checking it out, may try it this weekend. I think it's still too early but maybe get lucky with something. At the very least it IS drop dead gorgeous along the lower river there. Iv'e also seen a few of our local "combat" fishermen staring into the waters off the bridge that crosses the Salmon River at HWY 101, this could be an indication that something good is about to happen. LOL

I think it's still too early for the Salmon.  But, you can surely start picking up bluebacks and resident cutts.

We had 2 Salmon show in the Siletz trap today so they're on their way - but no real exciement yet.

Anyone else fishing this weekend?

Urungus, Wannabe and I will fish at one of three locations on Sunday.  Beverly Beach State Park/Otter Rock, Depoe Bay or Seal Rock which is south of here 20 minutes (35 on a tourist weekend).  I'll probably post an update on this thread Saturday evening after we make plans.

If you're thinking of coming up a central meeting location would be the day use parking lot in Beverly Beach State Park. Look for others with yaks.

Greg

8/2 am: The weather is a little overcast but should burn off.  Waves are small and, unless the wind changes, this is a go for tomorrow morning.  Any other Yakkers going to join us?  The beach here is shallow so if you fall off you'll be standing on sand.  This is a great opportunity to practice dumping and recovering.

8/3 am: the waves are flat here at BB and that's where you'll find us - bobbing around Otter Rock and possibly Gull Rock.

Well,  I was hoping to see posts by Urungus and Wannabe.  I'll leave it to them to describe their close encounter with whales.

I'll tell you, the weather wasn't cooperating.  Winds and swells from the NW kept us off Beverly Beach so we headed up to Depoe Bay where the launch is pretty simple.

I'd say we were out a few hours but the wind wouldn't allow us to keep our offerings bouncing on the bottom and moved us out of the zone pretty quick.  We were just about to cross the bar when the Coast Guard came visiting to make sure we were OK on their way to help the bigger boats back in.  We sprinted in to the bay between boats as the waves picked up.

Wannabe turned out to be the only one that caught a sizable fish, a cabezon.  I hooked into a very small blue while jigging for baitfish. (note to self, buy/make heavier jig heads and bars).

Following that we went down to the Yaquina jetty hoping for some protection from the wind and waves.  Once we got there and looked around we decided to head to Oscar's for burrito's instead.

Both Urungus and Wannabe declared it to be the roughest conditions they'd ever been out on but neither chummed!  Therefore, with the powers vested in my by no one other than myself I hereby certify them as "Depoe Bay Whale Bait" and I do believe they both had a good time.

Of course, a few hours after they'd left conditions mellowed out.  I'd have gone out again but was having fun of the 2 wheeled type.

Drift chutes help a whole bunch when the wind wants you to go sailing. They can make a marginal day into a great fishing day. :D

I carry an ungodly assortment of weights and jigheads when I go out. It's mostly ballast, but I hate not having enough weight  to get down.

Good going on getting out. I'm jealous.

Yup; Urungus, FS & I made it out from Depoe Bay on Sunday, and as FS said, amidst the tallest/steepest water I've been out in.  Windy, too, to the extent  it was hard for the paddlers to stay over the fish. Peddling, I was able to hover long enough to catch a 14" Cabezon, but we cashed out after a couple of hours. None too soon, though, as the queasiness was starting to to take hold a bit and my breakfast didn't have much promise for quality chum.

I've gotta say, Depoe Bay is a great launch/landing site. Can't speak much about the quality of the fishing because of the conditions, but FS seems to do well there so I'm looking forward to a return trip.

Overall, despite the slim fishing, it was a worthwhile trip. The high point, for sure, was having a Gray breach about 100 m off my bow. Very cool.
