Rainbows with my son Ryu (age 10)!!! North Kenai, AK

Friday was my birthday so I took the day off and drove down to Kenai with the kids who had just gotten back from Japan.  Interestingly enough, my son had gone semi deep drop fishing (250 ft or so with smaller electric reels)  with the ex-father in law and was ranting and raving about fishing as soon as he got back, so of course we had to fish.

He's been out in the ocean before but its been over a year so first we had to hit a lake.  A colleague of mine has a summer home in North Kenai so we stayed there.

Rainbows to 20 + inches and one fish after the other.  A really great time.  Its ultra cool having a son so excited about fishing.  It's even better when he wants to try a Barbie rod since I had caught fish with it.  Right after one of the rainbows jumps into the kayak, he immediately relates it to the video where a silver jumped in my kayak.  SUPER good feeling to have your son proudly compare his catch to mine and recall it the way he did. 

Video for the day.  At nearly 4 minutes its double the length I normally try to keep it.  But this video is frankly more for him than the public.  I had a BLAST!!!!  Thanks Ryu, my best buddy and fishing partner!!!!!!  I had one of the best birthdays ever!!!!!

Great job getting him involved early I can't wait to take my grandson out he's 3 now and once he can swim well it's on.

 Ryu was rocking that spidey pole. With some really nice bows. Was that at Sportsman Lake ?
 I have to wonder what your son was thinking as you were "coaching" him.
 something like "Dad shut up --- I got this " . Probably not but I found it funny. We have seen Ryu catch some awesome fish. My favorite was with that 16' pole. I want to do that myself.

That was a blast! So cool to hear kids stoked on kayak fishing.

Happy birthday Rudy. Yes it is great getting time with the kids. Got mine out local and scored their first kings. 4 kings in 2 days plus 2 jacks. Funny being older you cherish the memory now. The kids will cherish them in 10 yrs.

That's awesome Fergy!!   My kid was a little concerned I was taking him out to a lake.  He has kayaked in the ocean and caught reds from shore all day long.  But it proved to be a great day and as you say,. i can vividly recall the days I went out fishing with my family as a child.  Best memories I have bar none.  Family time AND had a blast!!!!

Sweet.  All of my best fishing memories are with my kids. They are all grown up now and instead of trout it is pelagics and lobster but we still fish together every year. Teach them how to clean and cook them and they will be Jedi.
