Wife and I got in late to WG finally asleep by 230 am got up at 1230 pm. Wife works nights so weird sleeping hours. Ate brunch and didn't get on the water by 3 fished for 3 hours, fishing the low tide. Wife missed a small bite bout 10 mins in, we anchored in 25 ft of water, just outside of the kelp beds half mile off shore. After checking her bait, we used salmon scraps, and hooligan, circle hooks with 12 oz of weight, spreader bar. When the water slowed down I threw on a 2 oz jig. After the bait check, I checked my pole and oh I had a fish on, pulled up and set the hook. Little 12 pounder that we kept. Sweet! 30 mins later my wife was laying on her back with her pole held on her belly and she gets a bite, fish takes off and doesn't stop for 2 mins, before she can finally sit up lol, took about 20 mins to land her first halibut from a kayak! 46 inches or 46 pounds for her first one!!! Used the shark hook method works ok, still haven't picked up a harpoon. Another 30 mins later with jig was just about to do a bait check (I put small pieces of hooligan and a piece of salmon fin to stay on the hook while jigging, we also had a chum bag on the anchor chain) to put more pieces of hooligan reeled up 2 cranks and stopped, felt the bite, didn't really have to set the hook as the fish felt the point and took off. Of course took off and went around my wives rig and to get that untangled, before I could put some more pressure on the fish. Took a few mins to get it up and look down and it is big!!! I thought just a little bit bigger than my wives but much bigger! Saw the hook was hooked great in the upper lip, was finally able to get a knife shot in the gills to let it bleed out. 10 mins of bleeding felt ok to try and gaff the guy, gaffed in the shoulder to hold him in place, held him next to the kayak to let him thrash once in a while, got the shark hook in its mouth real good, was able to get him on top of the kayak and knife he threw the back bone to keep him from thrashing all over!! Whoo biggest one yet for me. Thank the Lord! We fished for another 30 mins, wife was ready and we headed in with 3 fish! Was a great day! Marked on one of our paddles the length and the biggest was 53 inches, live weight 72.8 pounds!!!! Wives was 46 inches or 46 pounds, the small one 30.5 inches or right around 12 pounds!

  Dude,
That is so bad ass for both of you. That's the way fishing should be--- fast and furious.
Damn--- you're taking home over 100 lbs of filets for 3 hours work/play.
  That's just good fishing.
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

Thanks for the replies! About 20 miles away from WG driving at 130 am, we came within a half second or less of hitting a cow moose that decided to run across the road, had to slam on the brakes and swerve to the right. Closet I have come to hitting a moose here in Alaska. Drive save !

Nice fish. And even better that it didn't take all day.

That is one heck of a haul. Every one else is struggling right now. Managed two fish that'd average ten pounds Saturday. Going to fish Homer today.

Great catch!!! Everyone is trying to figure out how to anchor now!!!

Wow, nice work. That would be a successful day in any type of boat.
Fishing relaxes me. It's like yoga except I get to kill something.

Just remember when you anchor to have plenty of anchor line. Recommended is 3 feet of line per every foot of depth. This allows the boat to move with the waves and reduces tension on the anchor, so you can stay where you want.

Those were slabs.  Pics look great but must say they looked bigger in person. Way to go dude.

Dude -

Curious as to how you ended up rigging your quick-release for the Buoy-to-kayak connection.   I still have concerns about anchoring, and having a good reliable quick-release is the only way I could talk myself into it.
