There was a thread on ifish last year regarding this subject. A group of kayakers (maybe some from here?) had their kayaks hauled out to the tuna grounds (50 miles or so), then they unloaded the kayaks and went to work. The video showed them having great success and lots of fun. Unfortunately I couldn't find the link. It looks like this year may be a repeat of 2007 when tuna were caught very close in because guys are already catching tuna at the banana which is only about 20 miles from Newport. At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if fish are within 10 miles (or closer) of Depoe Bay by August.

Yup. BTDT.   ;)

I'm a big fan of offshore and since moving to Washington 12 years ago I've made Swiftsure Banks a frequent destination up to 5 times per year. It's a 30 mile trip, but I don't just go when I feel like it the conditions have to be just right. I screwed up once about 7 years ago and it took about 6 hours of hard work to get back to shore against 20+ kt winds and I was cooked. There are factors that make offshore much more difficult than flat water things like: Bar crossings, surf launches, currents, chop or even big swells and the cold wind can all add up and take it out of you. If your range is 20 miles on flat water I wouldn't go farther than 5 miles offshore until you figure out how everything is going to impact you and your gear. You have do the training, both physically and mentally because it is a different ball of wax. And last but not least your mantra should always be 'nobody is coming to save me' because when it gets sloppy out there everybody will be gunning it to the beach and you'll be left alone with no option to walk home.

I am "guiding" a kayak fishing trip in Pula, Croatia in September, BFT is on the menu and close to shore.  the stoke factor is high.

Best quote I've read today this week.

I am curious to see your link here Allen but apparently I'm not part of the club. When I click the link I get a message that says, "this link is off limits to you"  The forum  :police: probably think I am too sensitive or too old for this information and they are probably right.  ;D Seriously though, is this a link to the video that I saw last year? If so, it is a good one.
